FORT WORTH, Texas— Led by a podium finish from freshman
Alexandra Schipai, the Colorado Mesa University women's triathlon team had three of the top seven NCAA Division II finishers and all-region performers as the Mavericks took second in the division and sixth overall at the Women's Collegiate Triathlon West Regional Championships on Sunday here at Marine Creek Lake Park.
Schipai, who has now led the Mavericks in all three of her races this season, finished third amongst Division II triathletes and 30
th overall with a time of one hour, nine minutes, 10.32 seconds while contributing 69 of the Mavs' 305 team points.
Meanwhile, sophomore
Shantelle Tupaz earned her second consecutive Collegiate Triathlon Coaches Association All-Region accolade, finishing fifth amongst Division II finishers and 35
th overall in 1:10:04.29 while adding 64 team points.
Maverick senior
Nadine Klive also picked up all-region honors, which go to the top seven finishers in each division, placing 37
th overall and seventh in the division with a time of 1:10:45.50 to contribute 62 team points.
The Mavs' other two scorers were
Josie Williams, who placed 42
nd overall in 1:12:32.93 and freshman
Ellayna Potter, who took 46
th in 1:13:24.34. They added 57 and 53 team points, respectively.
The Mavs also took second in Division II at last year's regional in Springfield, Missouri and have now finished first or second in seven consecutive seasons.
Arizona, the defending Division I national champions, had a phenomenal day as the nation's second-ranked Wildcats swept the top five overall places to win the race with 450 points ahead of No. 5 and host TCU, which scored 406.
Arizona's Kelly Wetteland won the individual title in 1:02:23.24, 15 seconds clear of teammate Margareta Vrablova (1:02:38.51).
South Dakota finished third with 366, edging Denver by just one point.
Drury took the top Division II spot and took fifth overall with 335 points and had the other four all-region picks, including Alexis Workman and Kristina Vestman who joined Schipai on the podium.
Workman finished 21
st overall in 1:07:39.87 while Vestman was 26
th in 1:08:46.89.
Cal Poly Humboldt finished third amongst Division II teams and seventh overall with 269 points, 36 fewer than the Mavs. Indianapolis finished eighth overall and fourth of the five Division II teams with 198 points while Black Hills State was 12
th and fifth amongst Division II squads with 144 points. The Yellow Jackets had just four competitors.
North Central, the reigning Division III national champions, won that division on Sunday placing ninth overall with 194 points. They also had just four of their five participants finish.
The Mavericks had ten triathletes compete on Sunday as sophomore
Mackenzie Mayer cracked the top 50 in the 114-woman field, finishing 50
th in 1:13:24.34. Freshman
Macy Arch, racing in her home state, was 52
nd overall as CMU's No. 7. She finished in 1:14:20.54.
The other Maverick finishers included
Jaycee Stephens, who was 56
th in 1:15:00.35). Freshman Syvlie Aardema Gagnon was just two spots behind 1:15:42.78 to take 58
th while
Fiona Graves took 61
st in 1:16:15.28.
The Mavericks will close out the fall on Nov. 8 competing in the national championship race in Tempe, Arizona. The Mavs finished fourth in Division II last year.
