Mavs set three records, six NCAA Provo marks in season-opener

CMU claims 15 event wins at Mountaineer Open

GUNNISON, Colo.Gaby Horton, Brooke Miller and Christina Palmer all set new school records as the Colorado Mesa University indoor track and field teams combined for six NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying marks and 15 event wins at Saturday' Mountaineer Open, the Mavs' first full team meet of the 2024-25 season.

Horton set two of those NCAA marks as she blazed to a school-record and winning time of 7.46 seconds in the 60 meters before coming back to win the 200 in 24.51 seconds while moving up a spot to third in program history for that discipline.  Her 60-meter time was five hundredths of a second below the former 5-year old Maverick school record of 7.51 seconds, set in 2019 by Brooklynn York.

Meanwhile, Miller took 1.52 seconds off her own 800-meter Maverick mark, running to the win in 2:14.53, which will lower even further to 2:12.62 on the national performance list with the altitude-adjustment.

Palmer also broke her own school record in the shot put with a winning throw of 13.34 meters (43-9) after taking second in the weight throw with a solid heave of 14.80 meters (48-6.5).

Teammate Augustine Hancock won that event with a NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark of 17.22 meters (56-5.75) while freshman Elly Thiem took third with a mark of 14.36 meters (47-1.75) in her collegiate debut to take over the No. 10 mark in program history.

CMU's women won eight events throughout the meet.

The Maverick men, who won seven events, were led by newcomer Antone Higgs.  The Bahamian and Colby (Kan.) Colorado College transfer set NCAA Championship provisional qualifying marks in both the long and triple jumps, sweeping those events.  He turned in a mark of 7.35 meters (24-1.5) in the long jump and now ranks third in CMU history.  He also had a triple jump mark of 14.82 (48-7.5) and sits fifth in Maverick lore for that discipline.

Freshman Hayden Moreno also debuted in the No. 9 spot of program history in the long jump with a mark of 7.01 meters (23-0) to place second behind Higgs in that event.

Women's freshman jumper Kendra Ritzmann was also a winner, taking the long jump with a mark of 5.30 meters (17-4.5) before finishing second in the triple jump with an effort of 11.32 meters (37-1.5) to move into the No. 6 spot of CMU history.

The Mavs also had a slew of other strong performances on the track.

CMU swept both hurdling events as Rimari Facey (9.24) and Jessie Schaffer (9.36) went 1-2 in the women's 60-meter race before Aidan Brownell (8.34) and Trevor Kendall (8.37) led a 1-2-3-4 men's sweep.  Brownell now ranks seventh in CMU history while Kendall, another freshman, is eighth with his time.

Horton was backed up by sophomore Sylvia Johansen, who took second in the 60-meter dash with a solid time of 7.70 seconds.

Meanwhile, Marik Cummings set a personal-best mark of 6.84 to finish second in the men's race, behind teammate Teo Casados, who was competing unattached.  Cummings now ranks sixth in CMU history, one spot ahead of Amaris Mora, who finished third in 6.89 seconds.

Megan Hodges then posted a massive personal-best time of 5:18.61, 47 seconds quicker than her former best, to take second in the mile.  She now sits fourth in program history with that mark.  Shirley Weaver also posted a solid time of 5:34.27 to finish fourth.

Meanwhile, Kelsey Montague opened his final collegiate season with a win in the men's 400 meters, posting a time of 49.85 seconds.

Sophomores Dylan Campbell and Kyle Towne then both went under the 2-minute mark in the 800 meters as Campbell won the race in 1:59.20, edging Towne, who took second in 1:59.34.

Serenity Burnett-Perry was second behind Horton in the women's 200, recording a time of 25.34 seconds while freshman Kammi Merritt took third in 25.49 seconds, debuting in the No. 9 spot of program history.

The Maverick men also took the top three spots in the 200 as Mora won in 22.31 seconds ahead of Quentin Hartel (22.49) and Kendall (23.67).

The Mavs also swept the 4x400-meter relays as Horton, Burnett-Perry, Miller and Merritt won in 4:01.29 before Montague, Campbell, Mora and Hartel won the men's race in 3:27.21.

Other notable marks in the distance races included a facility record time of 17:49.53 in the 5,000 meters by Maverick graduate assistant coach Greta Van Calcar.  She paced Kirstin Williams, who finished in 18:25.61.

Kendall White also took second in the 3K, running to a time of 10:46.37 to take over the No. 9 spot in program history.

Kevin DeGree took fourth in the men's 5K with a time of 16:17.19 while Drexel Cox led two CMU men in the 3K with a sixth place time of 9:29.97.

Elsewhere, Madison Cook took third in the women's 400 meters (1:02.84) while Kaelea Gibson did the same in the high jump, after clearing 1.55 meters (5-1).

Meanwhile, Garrett Searls cleared 4.29 meters (14-0.75) to finish third in the men's pole vault while Cain Trimble led three Maverick men in the shot put with a fourth place heave of 14.24 meters (46-8.75).  Kaiden Major also placed fourth for the Maverick men in the weight throw, posting a mark of 13.53 meters (44-4.75), to rank ninth in CMU history.

The Mavericks will now be off of competition for seven weeks, before returning to action on the Jan. 23-25, 2025 weekend, sending most of the team to the Adams State University Qualifier and a small group to the Nevada Invitational & Multis, a recent addition to the Maverick schedule.
