GUNNISON, Colo.—
Gaby Horton,
Brooke Miller and
Christina Palmer all set new school records as the Colorado Mesa University indoor track and field teams combined for six NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying marks and 15 event wins at Saturday' Mountaineer Open, the Mavs' first full team meet of the 2024-25 season.
Horton set two of those NCAA marks as she blazed to a school-record and winning time of 7.46 seconds in the 60 meters before coming back to win the 200 in 24.51 seconds while moving up a spot to third in program history for that discipline. Her 60-meter time was five hundredths of a second below the former 5-year old Maverick school record of 7.51 seconds, set in 2019 by Brooklynn York.
Meanwhile, Miller took 1.52 seconds off her own 800-meter Maverick mark, running to the win in 2:14.53, which will lower even further to 2:12.62 on the national performance list with the altitude-adjustment.
Palmer also broke her own school record in the shot put with a winning throw of 13.34 meters (43-9) after taking second in the weight throw with a solid heave of 14.80 meters (48-6.5).
Teammate
Augustine Hancock won that event with a NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark of 17.22 meters (56-5.75) while freshman
Elly Thiem took third with a mark of 14.36 meters (47-1.75) in her collegiate debut to take over the No. 10 mark in program history.
CMU's women won eight events throughout the meet.
The Maverick men, who won seven events, were led by newcomer
Antone Higgs. The Bahamian and Colby (Kan.) Colorado College transfer set NCAA Championship provisional qualifying marks in both the long and triple jumps, sweeping those events. He turned in a mark of 7.35 meters (24-1.5) in the long jump and now ranks third in CMU history. He also had a triple jump mark of 14.82 (48-7.5) and sits fifth in Maverick lore for that discipline.
Freshman
Hayden Moreno also debuted in the No. 9 spot of program history in the long jump with a mark of 7.01 meters (23-0) to place second behind Higgs in that event.
Women's freshman jumper
Kendra Ritzmann was also a winner, taking the long jump with a mark of 5.30 meters (17-4.5) before finishing second in the triple jump with an effort of 11.32 meters (37-1.5) to move into the No. 6 spot of CMU history.

Jessie Schaffer (9.36) went 1-2 in the women's 60-meter race before

Horton was backed up by sophomore
Sylvia Johansen, who took second in the 60-meter dash with a solid time of 7.70 seconds.
Meanwhile,
Marik Cummings set a personal-best mark of 6.84 to finish second in the men's race, behind teammate

Amaris Mora, who finished third in 6.89 seconds.

Kaiden Major also placed fourth for the Maverick men in the weight throw, posting a mark of 13.53 meters (44-4.75), to rank ninth in CMU history.
The Mavericks will now be off of competition for seven weeks, before returning to action on the Jan. 23-25, 2025 weekend, sending most of the team to the Adams State University Qualifier and a small group to the Nevada Invitational & Multis, a recent addition to the Maverick schedule.
