Ayres wins, divers set qualifying marks

CMU women extends RMAC winning to 36 behind 14 top five finishes

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Sophomore Max Ayres won the 50-yard breaststroke, divers Jenna Hurley and Ryan Campbell set their first NCAA qualifying marks of the season while Olivia Hansson set her third NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying time of the weekend to highlight the Colorado Mesa University Maverick Swimming & Diving team's efforts on Saturday at the Intermountain Shootout here at the El Pomar Natatorium.

The Mavericks also recorded seven total top-3 finishes and 23 top-5 tallies throughout the day, which saw the Maverick women go 1-2 in the quadrangular format while extending their 9-year Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual-meet winning streak to 36 with a dominant 174-26 win over CSU Pueblo.

The Maverick women, who had 14 of the top five finishes, did fall to NCAA Division I and Big 12 Conference foes BYU (174 ½-59 ½) and Utah (133-69) in Saturday's multi-team dual.

CMU's men had nine top five finishes, including Ayres' victory and a second place finish in the 200 medley relay, but were downed by BYU, 148-57, and Utah, 108-91.  The margin against Utah was the closest in 15 all-time tries against the Utes.

Ayres, a returning all-American in both medley relays, won the 50 breast in 25.72 seconds while Cal transfer and fifth-year senior Forrest Frazier touched in 25.90 seconds to take second as the Mavericks men put five in the top nine of that rarely contested event.  Ayres also teamed with Andrew Scoggin, Dejan Urbanek and Austin Patterson to take second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:30.47.

Meanwhile, the Maverick divers shined as Hurley scored 404.78 points over 11 dives off the 1-meter springboard to take second place while easily earning the first of two necessary NCAA qualification marks of the season, going over the standard of 390.00 points.  Teammates Emma Lence, who finished fourth with 385.20 points, and Kenya Meyer, who took fifth with 381.90, were not far off that standard.

Campbell, a transfer from Monroe (N.Y.) Community College, where he won a NJCAA national championship, took fourth in the men's 3-meter diving event with 476.25 points while David Roethlisberger (447.45) was not far off the national qualifying standard of 460.00 points while taking fifth place on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Hansson took fourth in the 500 free with a time of 5:06.99 (5:01.99-converted) to follow-up her 200 Fly and 1000 Free NCAA "B" cut times from Friday night.

The Maverick women also had three top five finishes in the 50 Fly as Kiara Borchardt took second in 25.90 seconds ahead of Tori Bartusiak (26.55) and Amber Siverts (26.56), who were fourth and fifth, respectively.  Borchardt also took third in the 100 Fly with a time of 57.67 seconds after swimming the butterfly leg on the Mavs' third place 200 medley relay team that also included Agata Naskret, Maddi Moran and Ada Qunell.  That quartet turned in a time of 1:44.03 to open the meet.

Moran also took fourth in the 50 Breast (29.96) while Naskret took fourth in the 200 back with a time of 2:04.72, just ahead of Katerina Matoskova, who touched the wall in 2:05.26 to take fifth.

Sophia Bains also recorded a fifth place finish in the 400 IM with a time of 4:36.64 while Qunell, Kendyll Wilkinson, Hansson and Elli Williams took fourth in the 400 Free Relay with a time of 3:30.30 near the end of the meet.

The Maverick men's quartet of Jameson McEnaney, Kuba Kiszczak, Richard Schmiedefeld and Jackson Moe also took fourth in 3:02.62.

School record-holder Marcos Otero also recorded an individual fourth place finish, doing so with a time 2:05.37 in the 200 Breast while Scoggin finished fifth in the 200 Back with a time of 1:52.09.

Xander Zappas also took fifth in the 50 Fly, completing that event in 22.57 seconds.

The Mavericks will next compete in three weeks when they host another Division I opponent Wyoming in a Oct. 26 dual, slated to begin at 1 o'clock that afternoon.
