GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Tyler Landen and
William Leschig each won two main draw matches to lead the Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team on the first day of competition during the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) West Regional Championships on Thursday here at the Elliott Tennis Center.
Landen and Leschig teamed for a doubles win and advanced to Friday's main draw quarterfinals while Landen moved to the round of 16 in the main singles draw with a come-from-behind victory over MSU Denver's Carlos Pinedo. Landen dropped the first set and was in the middle before a short rain delay helped him turn the tide in his 2-6, 6-4, 10-6 win.
Leschig also scored a 3-set win over the Roadrunners' Juho Kanotla in the consolation bracket and is one of seven Mavs still alive in consolation singles play after the first of the tournament's three days.
The Mavs also have three doubles teams still alive in the consolation quarterfinals, all of which received byes after falling in their opening main draw matches, which kicked off nearly 11 hours of play at 8 a.m. on Thursday morning.
Landen and Leschig received a first round bye in doubles and then took out MSU Denver's Billy McDermott and Jean-Loup Auzias in the second round by an 8-5 margin.
Emil Hultman and
Jandre Van Wyk had also recorded a first round doubles win over Sebastian Herrera and Isaac Cordova of Biola in the first round. Herrera is the defending champion and top seed in the singles draw.
Hultman and Van Wyk then fell to the No. 2 seeds Leyton Bohren and Miha Veliciki of Azusa Pacific in the second round.
Elsewhere,
Jorge Abreu picked up a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win over David Strassburger of Point Loma Nazarene in the first round of singles play before dropping his second round match to the sixth-seeded Leon Czarnikau of Concordia.
Four other Mavs won a main draw singles set in their opening round matches, but went down in the 10-point match tiebreakers.
Hultman also recorded a win over teammate
Brandon Keller in the second round of consolation singles play. That 6-2, 6-1 victory came in a match moved up from Friday morning to help avoid any possible weather-related delays. Van Wyk also moved to the consolation quarterfinals by walkover.
Friday's action will begin at 8 a.m. The tournament runs through Saturday.
