PUEBLO, Colo.- After two days of competition, the Colorado Mesa men's tennis team wrapped up their first fall competition of the season. The Mavericks finished the invite with six top four finishes and three top two finishes.
It was an All-Mav showdown in the A Flight final as
Diego Foncillas took on
Josema Fas for the title. Foncillas won the first set 6-3 before Fas withdrew from the match due to an injury.
Manu Ferreira played for third place but lost in straight sets to finish fourth.
Meanwhile in the B Flight,
Gavin Hutter competed in the semifinals but lost in a tough two set battle. He salvaged his day with an 8-6 victory over Matisse Pierre of Western New Mexico to capture third place.
Luke Burriesci won his first match of the backdraw, beating Djamel-Dine Bey of Western New Mexico 8-3 to book his ticket to the final where he came up short in a tiebreak that came down to the wire.
Andrew Lock and
Daniel Blanch won both of their first matches to play each other, where Blanch came out on top 8-4.
Doubles saw the Mav duo of Fas and Ferreira compete in the semifinals where they lost. Hutter and Blanch were the other Mav duo to play but they lost their consolation final in a close match.
The men continue their fall season in the Sunflower State as they travel to Topeka to play in the Washburn Invite. Matches are set to start on Oct. 2.
