Ferreira and Hutter go 3-0 as Mavs Round Out Washburn Invite

TOPEKA, Kan.- The Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team made the 11-hour trip to the Sunflower State Capital and combined for 14 wins across singles and doubles play. Gavin Hutter and Manu Ferreira both went 3-0 in singles and won their respective flights.    

Singles 
The singles draw was split up into four flights: blue, red, green and purple. Diego Foncillas was placed in the blue flight while Josema Fas played in the red flight. Ferreira and Daniel Blanch played in the green flight while Andrew Lock, Luke Burriesci and Hutter placed in the purple flight.  

Foncillas had a rough going in his first-round match as went up against eventual finalist Keita Kuroda of Washburn. Foncillas won the first set 6-2 but lost a close second set 6-4. Foncillas battled hard in the third-set tiebreak but lost 10-8 in a hard-fought match. 

Fas matched up against Southwest Baptist's Ilia Ivanov in the first round and won 6-3, 7-6. He then faced Washburn's Nicolas Hurtado Novoa in the semifinals and lost 7-5, 6-3. He played for third place against another Washburn player in Gaël Mourmant where he lost the first-set 6-1 and then pulled out due to an injury.  

Ferriera's run to the green flight crown began against Washburn's Graham Faris where he came out on top 6-1, 7-6. His semifinal match against Emporia State's Maxime Raoux came down to wire as Ferreira won the first set 6-3 while Raoux dominated the second 6-0. The tiebreak ended in favor of Ferreira as he closed out the match 10-6 to book his ticket to the final. Ferreira's opponent would be another Emporia State Hornet in Dimitar Berdankov. Ferreira once again got the best of a Hornets players as he won 7-5, 6-4 to clinch the green flight title.  

Blanch faced eventual finalist Berdankov in his first-round match and pushed him to the limit. Blanch won the first set 6-2 while Berdankov won the second 6-3. The tiebreak saw both players string points together but it was Berdankov who got the better of Blanch 10-7. Blanch's second match was another battle against Alexandru Marinescu of Southwest Baptist. Marinescu got the first set 6-3, but Blanch did not go down quietly as he won the won the second 6-4. Blanch did not let his tiebreak setback from earlier haunt him again as he came through 10-8 to get to the consolation final. His last singles match did not go as swimmingly as he lost in straight sets to Oliver Kocanovic.  

Hutter opened his tournament against Evan Goates and came through in a three-set clash 1-6, 6-4, 10-8. Hutter then took care of Conor McGruder 6-0, 6-3. His last match of the tournament against Dhruveer Grover was a close one. Grover got the first set 6-2 while Hutter battled back to win the second 6-3 and force a tiebreak. Hutter came out on top in an absolute thriller of a tiebreak 13-11 to finish the tournament undefeated.

Lock only played two times and managed to win both as beat Carlos Doria 6-2, 2-6, 11-9 and Grover 6-0, 6-3.  

Burriesci also played twice, he easily won his first match against Harrison Clark 6-0, 6-1 and came up short against Alexis Mattenberger.  

Doubles 
The draw for doubles was split up into two flights, red and blue. Foncillas/Fas and Ferreira/Blanch placed in the red flight while Lock/Burriesci paired up to play in the blue flight.  

Both Fas/Foncillas and Ferriera/Blanch lost their first-round matches, but Ferreira/Blanch won their next match to make it to the consolation final but came up short in their last match. Burriesci/Lock went 2-1 in the red draw, winning their first two but came up short in their last match 7-6.  

Next Time Out 
The Mavs head out further west to play in the annual ITA West Regional Championships. Matches start on Oct. 15 at Haak Tennis Complex in Fresno, Calif.
