GRAND JUNCTION Colo.- Following an up-and-down campaign, the Colorado Mesa University men's and women's tennis teams will look to start the fall season strong as they travel to Pueblo for the Colorado College Invite. 

About the Event 
The event is hosted by Division III program Colorado College and will take place at Pueblo City Park Tennis Complex. Western New Mexico is also scheduled to play in the event.

The format will feature both singles and doubles, with singles being best two out of three sets with a ten point tiebreaker for the third and doubles being one set to 6 games. 

Who's Playing
Head Coach Dan MacDonald enters his 22nd season at the helm and he will bring both teams to Pueblo with a chance to make a good first impression.

About Last Year 
The men's team finished last year with a 6-16 record, but most of their matches came down to the wire. However, it was not all doom and gloom as the Mavs would see big wins against nationally ranked foes such as Colorado College and NAIA's Arizona Christian. They would also take nationally ranked Cameron and Biola to the brink only losing 5-2 in both matches. 

Meanwhile, the women's team would own a 12-15 record including wins against Colorado College, Hawai'i Hilo and Menlo. The team would go on a three match win streak in Arizona where they swept Western New Mexico, Ottawa (Ariz.) and Arizona Christian. They also battled against two Division 1 opponents in Idaho State and Utah Tech. 

New Look Mavs 
The Mavs will feature eight new players, with three on the men's side and five on the women's. While the men graduated five players last year, the newcomers will look to make their mark. This includes freshman Josema Fas, who is a highly-touted player coming from Spain. The Mavs also added transfer Manu Ferreira, who comes from Ferrum College where he played at the one spot in both singles and doubles. 

The women's team did not lose many players but will look to their five new freshmen to contribute. Luciana Del Carlo from Peoria, Ariz. and Camryn Shelton from Waco, Texas made the all-district teams in their respective states while Brooklyn Cox won team MVP during her time at Green Valley. Ruby Robbins joins the Mavs after winning a team state title, a doubles and a singles title during her time in high school. Eva Muraske rounds out the newcomers as she is highly touted coming out of Germany. 

Returners 
The men's team will feature sophomore Daniel Blanch, juniors Andrew Lock and Luke Burriesci and senior Gavin Hutter. Hutter complied an overall singles record 8-20 while at the four, five and six spots and a 2-4 record in doubles with Burriesci as his partner. Speaking of Burriesci, he went 8-19 in singles while mostly playing in the six spot. Lock saw limited time, only registering a 1-1 record in singles and a 2-4 record in doubles partnering with both Burriesci and Jamison Pfingston. 

The women's team will return sophomores Valentina Gonzalez and Sophie Hartman, juniors Catalina Ballon and Taylor Nokes and senior Devyn Rodriguez. Gonzalez went 13-15 overall with a dual record of 11-13 in singles mostly playing in the two spot and a doubles record of 19-12 playing in the three spot with Hartman. Hartman amassed a singles record of 9-4 with a 6-2 record playing at the six spot. Balllon is coming off a good season with an overall singles record of 16-15 and a dual record of 12-13 switching between the three, four and five spots. Her doubles record is even more impressive as she went 21-11 with partner Delia Maier at the number two spot. Nokes saw limited play time as she only went 1-1 in doubles but went 3-0 in singles. Rodriguez played one singles and doubles for the Mavs last year, amassing a record of 16-16 in singles and 13-13 in doubles. 

Back in the PacWest
After a year of independence, both teams will rejoin the PacWest for the upcoming spring season. The conference will now feature eight teams on the men's side and 13 teams on the women's side with the addition of the Mavs. They will join Fresno Pacific, Menlo, CSU Los Angeles and Stanislaus State as affiliate members. The team will still be apart of the ITA West Region and will play against teams in the region during the spring season.

Take a Look Ahead 
Both teams will continue play throughout the fall. After the invite, the men will get some time off before heading to Topeka, Kan. to play the Washburn Invite. The matches will take place on Oct. 2 and 3 at the Kossover Tennis Center. 

The women will travel to Colorado Springs to play two dual matches on Sept. 26 at Memorial Park. They will play Fort Hays State at 11 a.m. and Colorado College at 2:30 p.m. 

Coach MacDonald will then take both of his squads to Fresno, Calif. to play in the ITA West Regional Championships. The event will take place across four days from Oct. 15-18 at the Haak Tennis Complex. 

The spring schedule has not been released yet, but will be available in the coming weeks.
