ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Redshirt freshman
Kelsey Montague broke the longest-standing Colorado Mesa University men's indoor track and field record while returning all-American
Sierra Arceneaux posted her second NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying time in as many days to lead a contingent of Colorado Mesa University Maverick track & field athletes at the New Mexico Classic, which wrapped up Saturday here in the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Montague ran to a time of 49.89 seconds in the 400 meters, edging Augustus Barnes' mark of 49.91, set in the same facility more than nine years ago (Feb. 1, 2013). CMU true freshman
Dayne Ortega was just behind in 49.93 and now ranks third in program history for the discipline.
Meanwhile, Arceneaux turned in a personal-best time of 24.34 seconds (24.41-converted) to take over the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference lead in the seeded section of the 200 meters late Friday evening. The Maverick sprinter then finished 60-meter qualifying on Saturday morning in 7.64 seconds to stand third in the RMAC with her altitude-converted time of 7.66.
Fellow sprinter
Rachel Crutcher also made it out of qualifying with a time of 7.68 seconds before the duo took 11
th and 13
th in the official preliminary round with slightly slower times.
Averie Griffith also competed for the CMU women on Saturday, posting a time of 9.40 seconds in the 60-meter hurdle preliminaries.
Another highlight on the men's side,
Jake Valdez turned in a career-best time of 1:57.72 to move into the No. 6 spot in CMU history in the 800 meters. He finished fifth while teammate
Casey Amori took eighth in 2:03.29.
Meanwhile,
Sterling Brassfield posted another solid time of 6.85 seconds in the 60-meter preliminaries, finishing 12
th overall, after running to a qualifying round time of 6.92.
Elijah Williams, who broke his own 200-meter school record on Friday afternoon, was exempted from qualifying and took 15
th in the event at 6.88 seconds.
While the CMU had a mostly sprint crew at this meet, they had a mostly field event crew at the Mines Winter Classic in Golden, Colorado, where they set two school records on Friday before getting an
NCAA provisional qualifying high jump mark from debutant Eddie Kurjak on Saturday.
The Mavs will be back in the Albuquerque Convention Center next weekend (Feb. 11-12) for the Don Kirby Elite Invitational.
