ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Elijah Williams broke his own school-record, posting a time of 21.45 seconds in the 200-meter dash, highlight the performances of the Colorado Mesa University Maverick sprinters on Friday afternoon during the New Mexico Classic.
Williams won his heat with that time, a slight improvement over his 2-month old mark of 21.48, over one lap of the banked track here at the Albuquerque Convention Center and took fourth place amongst 32 runners, including 11 Mavs, in the un-seeded sections of the event.
Sterling Brassfield (22.30),
Dayne Ortega (22.40) and
Kade Christensen (22.43) also won later heats and finished 14
th, 16
th and 18th, respectively.
Quentin Hartel was 17
th overall in 22.32. Ortega moved up to sixth in program history with his time while Hartel now ranks seventh after entering the day eighth in CMU lore. Christensen is now ranked eighth while Brassfield continues to hold down the No. 4 spot with his earlier season-best of 22.28.
Rachel Crutcher led the women's contingent of four, finishing seventh in an overall field of 45, with a time of 25.17 seconds. Meanwhile, freshman teammate
Serenity Burnett-Perry moved up three spots to sixth in program-history with a time of 25.77, good for 20
th place.
The Mavericks continue the meet on Saturday. They also have another contingent of athletes, mostly in the field events,
competing at the Mines Winter Classic in Golden, Colorado on Friday evening and Saturday.
