GOLDEN, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University's
Hayden Riley and
Justin Thompson both broke their own school records while they and women's freshman
Heather Yackey all won events on Friday evening here at the Mines Winter Classic indoor track and field meet.
Riley broke the shot put mark for the third time in four meets this season with a heave of 16.80 meters (55 feet, 1 ½ inch) while Thompson broke his 2-month old Maverick standard in the long jump, leaping 7.57 meters (24-10). Both are improved NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying marks.
Meanwhile, Yackey turned in a mark of 12.23 meters (40-1.5) to win the women's shot put, surging into the No. 2 spot in Maverick history. Her victory was the first of her CMU career.
Thompson, who moved up to as high as fifth on the national performance list after coming into the day ranked eighth, blasted his former indoor record of 7.40 meters (24-3.5), which had been set on Dec. 4 in the season-opening Mel Tjeerdsma Classic in Maryville, Missouri. He also now leads the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference this season.
Teammate
Zace Buckhold also jumped up five spots to fifth in Maverick history as he jumped 6.94 meters (22-9.25) to finish in fourth place fourth.
Gunner Rigsby was just behind is sixth at 6.91 meters (22-8) as the Mavs took five of the top nine places.
The women's long jumpers were nearly as strong as
Chian DeLoach,
Mica Jenrette and
Kailey Paterson all set season-best marks to finish second, third and fourth. DeLoach jumped 5.49 meters (18-0.25) while Jenrette finished with a mark of 5.26 meters (17-3.25), a centimeter than Paterson's mark of 5.25 meters (17-2.75).
Elsewhere, freshman
Garrett Searls led CMU in the pole vault clearing 4.48 meters (18-9.25) to finish sixth in that event.
Becker Ell tied for ninth, getting over 4.33 meters (14-2.5).
Jameson Moore also had a strong shot put performance, throwing a career-best 12.73 meters (41-9.25) to finish eighth.
The meet in the Colorado School of Mines' Steinhauer Fieldhouse will continue on Saturday.
CMU also had a contingent of sprinters
at the New Mexico Classic in Albuquerque, where Elijah Williams broke his own school-record in the 200 meters.
