GOLDEN, Colo.— In his Colorado Mesa University debut, freshman
Eddie Kurjak cleared a NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying height of 2.05 meters (6 feet, 8 ¾ inches) to lead the Maverick efforts during Saturday's portion of the Mines Winter Classic indoor track and field meet here at the Colorado School of Mines' Steinhauer Fieldhouse.
Kurjak, the 2021 4A Colorado State High School Champion, cleared that height and four others on his opening attempt and then passed at 2.08 meters before going out at 2.11 meters, which Mines 3-time all-American Grant Redmond, cleared to win the event. Kurjak finished second and is now tied for third in CMU history.
The Mavericks also had two other runner-up finishes as
Dawson Heide moved into fourth place in program history in the 60-meter hurdles as he posted a time of 8.24 seconds.
Mica Jenrette led the Maverick women with a runner-up time of 9.32 seconds in that discipline as the Mavs placed four hurdlers in the top six.
Elsewhere,
Sophie Lindauer cleared a career-best 1.66 meters (5-5.25) in the women's high jump to move into a 3-way tie for third in CMU history while also advancing to the 60-meter final, where she finished fifth in 8.09 seconds after running a career-best time of 7.96 seconds in the preliminary round.
Kierra Arceneaux was clocked in a personal-best 7.84 seconds in the preliminaries but did not start the final. She did move up a spot to ninth in CMU history with her preliminary round time.
In the throwing circle, redshirt freshman
Jameson Moore took third in the weight throw with a heave of 15.13 meters (49-7.75), good for his third overall top-3 finish of the season.
The Mavericks also had a group of athletes, mostly in the sprints, compete Saturday at the New Mexico Classic at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
CMU will also be there next weekend (Feb. 11-12) to compete in the Don Kirby Elite Invitational with the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships looming just two weeks later.
