GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Posting three more NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying times and a ten more top-3 finishes, the Colorado Mesa University men's and women's swimming teams fared quite well on Saturday, the second of two days of competition at the Intermountain Shootout.
The Maverick men went 3-1 in the head-to-head duals against the other four teams in the meet, earning hard-fought 206-202 win over the United States Air Force Academy and blow-out wins over Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rival Adams State University (342-47) and the CMU Club Team (337-36). The victory over the Falcons, which was clinched in the final race of the day, was CMU's first in 21 all-time dual meets against Air Force and was just CMU's second over a Division I opponent in the program's history.
Meanwhile, the CMU women also claimed their first Division I win in nearly five years, more than doubling up on Dixie State, 277-123, while going 4-4 in the eight separately scored dual meets. The Mavericks also easily extended their RMAC winning streak to 27 with dominant victories over CSU Pueblo (335-67) and Adams State (354-41). The Maverick varsity squad also defeated the club team, 345-32 and put up valiant efforts against the other four Division I teams in the meet (Air Force, BYU, Colorado State and Northern Colorado).
The Colorado State women and BYU men were the unofficial overall victors as each outfit went undefeated in the multiple-dual format.
Individually, the Mavericks won four events throughout the meet, including one on Saturday as
Lily Borgenheimer claimed the 200-yard breaststroke in two minutes, 20.19 seconds, one of the CMU's three NCAA "B" cut times of the day.
Lauren White also posted her second such time of the weekend as she took second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:03.59 after she set a NCAA time in the 200 free and winning the 100 back on Friday evening.
On the men's side, Serbian freshman
Dejan Urbanek easily eclipsed the "B" standard in the 200 fly with a time of 1:50.49, which with the 1.2 second altitude-adjustment puts him third on CMU's all-time performers' chart at 1:49.29. He took second in that event.
Throughout the meet, the Mavericks also combined for 45 top-5 finishes, more than half of which (23) came on Saturday.
Earlier,
Ben Sampson,
Mahmoud Elgayar, Urbanek and
Mado Elkady, making his collegiate debut, took second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:30.66.
Elgayar than finished third in the 50 breast, touching in 26.64 seconds before

Former CMU standout Sam Bryant had held the former pool record of 4:28.13 since 2017.
Sampson, who won the 100 back and placed second in the 100 IM on Friday, then completed his podium position trifecta taking third in the 200 IM at 1:54.93.

Josh Hamby scored 262.95 points on six dives to take fourth while
Tanner Belliston finished fifth with 255.15 points.
Leading by nine points heading into the meet-capping 400 free relay, the Mavericks knew they would need both scorings squads to finish ahead of their Air Force counterparts to win the dual.
