As a Junior (2023-24): Competed in ten meets, including the RMAC Championships… Scored in all seven of his conference championship events, reaching the championship final while placing eighth in the both the 100 Free and 200 Fly… Also took tenth in the 200 IM and 13th in the 200 Free while swimming on CMU’s “B” section winning 200 Medley, 200 Free and 800 Free Relays… Scored 33 team points in his four individual events while contributing another 13 ½ when counting his share of the relay points… Set NCAA “B” cut and personal-best altitude-adjusted times of 45.10 and 1:37.81 in the 100 and 200 Free, respectively…  Ranks tenth in program history for the 200 Free… Also set another personal-bests of 1:53.22 (converted) in the 200 Fly… Had a season-best of 49.39 seconds in the 100 Fly and another of 21.77 in the 50 Free… Went on to set a NCAA “B” Cut and personal-best time of 1:48.68 (converted) in the 200 IM at the CMU Last Chance Meet… Ranks seventh in program history with that time… Was voted on to the RMAC All-Academic First Team… Also earned Second Team CSCAA Scholar All-America plaudits.

Summer 2023: Competed at the USA Swimming Futures Championships in San Antonio, Texas… Had a personal-best LCM time of 2:17.37 and other season-best times of 2:01.34 (200 Free), 1:00.88 (100 Back) and 2:13.66 (200 IM).

As a Sophomore (2022-23): Competed in ten meets, including the RMAC Championships… Scored in all four of his individual and seven total events… Placed fifth in both the 200 IM and 100 fly, setting a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:49.93 (altitude-adjusted) in the 200 IM… Also placed ninth in the 200 Back and tenth in the 100 back… Set a new personal-best time of 49.36 (adjusted) in the 100 back during the preliminary round to rank tenth in program history… Had a 200 back season best of 1:49.07… Swam on CMU’s “B” heat winning 200 medley, 400 medley and 800 free relays… Accounted for 44 team points in his four individual events and 13 ½ when accounting for his share of the relay points… Posted another NCAA “B” cut time of 1:38.22 in the 200 free as the lead-off leg in the 800 free relay… Had set a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 48.89 in the 100 fly at the TYR CMU Invitational to rank ninth in program history… Was named as a Second Team CSCAA Scholar All-American at the RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll.

As a Freshman (2021-22): Competed in nine meets, including the RMAC Championships… Scored in all five of his events at the conference meet, placing fifth in both the 100 and 200 back, eighth in the 200 IM and ninth in the 200 free… Also earned Second Team All-RMAC honors as the third leg on the Mavs’ runner-up 800 free relay team… Scored 48 team points in his individual events and 56 ½ in total, when accounting for his share of the relay… Set a NCAA “B” cut and season-best time of 1:39.81 (altitude-adjusted) to win the consolation final of the 200 free…  Also set a season-best of 49.85 in the 100 back and season-bests of 1:50.45 (200 Back) and 1:52.82 (200 IM)… Helped the Mavs set a NCAA qualifying time of 6:40.07 in the 800 free relay… Had another season-best of 50.21 in the 100 fly to take second in the BYU/Denver tri-meet… Was a Second Team CSCAA Scholar All-American.

Prep: Served as the team captain for the Eric Work coached Rocky Mountain High School Lobos… Was a 3-year state championship qualifier who had his junior season (2020) canceled by COVID… Was a National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association All-American in 2019… Set a school record that year… Member of the National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society.

Club: Swam for Coach Mike Novell and the Fort Collins Area Swim Team… Was a state and club record holder in 2018… Was a Western Senior Zones Finalist in 2019… Finished third in the 200 free at the Colorado Senior Short Course Championships in 2020 after taking fourth in the 200 back at the Long Course Championships in 2018… Was a 2-event NAC Speedo Music City Invitational in 2017.

Personal: Is majoring in secondary education and history… Son of Sarah and John Walgast… Older sister Emily was a former collegiate swimmer at Adams State… Aspires to become a high school history teacher who spends summers working outdoors in various recreational activities… Enjoys rock climbing, white water kayaking, river surfing, skiing and snowboarding.

Why I Chose CMU: “I really enjoy the team culture. The coaches are excellent and caring. And the location of the University sits within one of the greatest recreational areas around.”
