Mavs take two to remain unbeaten in RMAC play

Wedman, Torres heroics lead CMU to DH sweep in Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo.— Lauren Wedman delivered a game-winning RBI to complete a 4-run comeback in the first game before AnnMarie Torres homered twice in the second to lead the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks to a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference softball victories over Colorado State University-Pueblo on Saturday afternoon here at the Pack's Rawlings Complex.

The Mavericks rallied from 5-2 down after five innings of the first game but scored three runs in the sixth on RBI hits by Ashley Bradford, Brooke Doumer and Jordyn Hays to tie the game before Wedman's 2-out single through the left side brought helped give the Mavericks a 6-5 win.

In the second game, Torres hit home runs in back-to-back innings before hitting another insurance run-scoring double in the seventh as the Mavericks posted a 5-run fifth inning en-route to a 7-2 victory and the road doubleheader sweep.

With the wins, the Mavericks improved to 12-4 overall and remained perfect in RMAC play at 6-0, good for a first place tie with Colorado Christian, which swept an RMAC doubleheader at Adams State in Alamosa.

Both are a 1 ½ games up on Regis (5-2 RMAC), which split a 4-game set at Chadron State, and two ahead of a host of 4-2 teams including No. 11 Dixie State, which fell to fellow 4-2 MSU Denver in a RMAC pod weekend game after both had beaten Black Hills State earlier the day in downtown Denver.

The ThunderWolves fell to 1-15 overall and to 1-5 in conference play heading into another doubleheader on Sunday at 11 a.m.

Game 1

The Mavericks had early opportunities to score in both the first and fourth innings but could not cash in on a bases-loaded and just one out situation in the top of the fourth after the ThunderWolves walked three Mavericks.

The hosts then took advantage scoring the game's first run in the bottom half on an Alyssa McWilliams RBI single that plated Samantha Riesen, who had begun the inning with a double.

However, the Mavericks would score twice in the fifth to take the lead in the see-saw game.  Bradford began the inning on a hit by pitch and took second on a groundout and third on a Doumer single.  A Hays single and ThunderWolf error then allowed both Bradford and Doumer to score.

The ThunderWolves then came roaring back in the bottom of the fifth as three straight singles plated a run, moments before a 3-run homer by Marissa Piatt gave CSU-Pueblo a 5-2 lead.

Ellie Smith then came into pitch for the Mavericks and gave up just one walk in three hits of nearly flawless relief to earn the win as the Mavericks would go on to rally in the two final innings.

In the sixth, pinch-hitter Nicole Christensen was plunked before a Bradford double made it 5-3.  Wedman then singled to set up a first and third situation before Doumer brought home another run with a single to center to bring in another run.

Torres then drew a walk to load the bases.  Two plays later, Hays hit a game-tying 1-out single to score Wedman while Doumer was thrown out at the plate trying to give the Mavericks the lead as CSU-Pueblo would get out of the inning even at 5.

Smith then retired the side in the bottom of the sixth before a 1-out double by Tayah Gerber helped set up Wedman for her game-winning RBI after a second out strikeout.  CMU looked for more and loaded the bases on a Doumer single and stolen base followed by a walk to Torres but could not convert.

However, Smith would not need the insurance policy as she retired the side in order once again to close out the win.  She improved to 4-2 on the year while Natalie Montgomery took the loss as the third CSU-Pueblo pitcher of the day.

Offensively, the Mavericks were led by Wedman and Doumer, who both went 3-for-4.  Torres was walked four times while Hays went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.  The Mavericks banged out then hits and drew 12 free passes on nine walks and three hit batsmen.

Game 2

The ThunderWolves again scored first as they took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a McWilliams groundout.

However, the Mavericks again rallied.

In the fourth, Torres hit a 1-out homer to tie the game.

They then did the big damage in the fifth as Hays doubled to begin the 5-run outburst.  The sophomore catcher then moved to third on a Christensen sacrifice before a walk and another hit by pitch loaded the bases with just one out.

A ThunderWolf error after a lineout then allowed Wedman to score the go-ahead run moments before Doumer singled home both Bradford and Kaley Barker, who had drawn the earlier walk, to put CMU up 3-1.

Torres then hit her next home run, a 3-run shot, to increase the lead to 6-1.

The Pack would pull one run back in the bottom of the sixth on a Kaitlyn Glaze RBI single before an unassisted double play by Bradford thwarted much of a comeback.

Leading 6-2 going to the last, Wedman led off the frame with a double before being erased on a fielder's choice.  However, Torres doubled home Doumer with CMU's final run as Paige Adair would go on to close out a strong pitching game to earn the victory.

The junior improved to 2-1 as she spread five hits and three walks over the complete game effort.  She also had five strikeouts.

Montgomery got the Game 2 start for CSU-Pueblo and fell to 0-5 after giving up five hits and five earned runs in 4 2/3 innings of work.

The Mavericks managed eight hits as Torres went 3-for-4 with a season-high five RBIs.  Hailey Hinson also had a 2-for-4 game while Doumer scored two runs and drove in two others.

The Mavericks left just four runners on base in the second game after leaving 13 stranded in the series opener.
