Torres hits two more homers as Mavs sweep doubleheader, series

CMU uses big innings to take 11-3, 4-2 wins in Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo.— AnnMarie Torres hit a home run in each game finishing the weekend with four as the Colorado Mesa University softball team used the big inning to sweep a Sunday doubleheader and their second straight 4-game weekend series against Colorado State University-Pueblo at the ThunderWolves' Rawlings Complex on Sunday.

The Mavericks, who swept Chadron State last weekend, scored five runs in back-to-back innings of the first game winning 11-3 in five innings before coming back to score three in the seventh inning of Game 2 to help claim a 4-2 win.

The Mavericks have now won eight straight and are 14-4 overall and a perfect 8-0 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play remaining in a first place tie with Colorado Christian, which swept a series at Adams State in Alamosa.

The ThunderWolves fell to 1-17 overall and to 1-7 in the loop.

Game 1

After hitting two home runs and driving in a season-high five RBIs in Saturday's 7-2 Game 2 win, Torres had another solid game going 2-for-4 with four RBIs as she drove in the Mavs' opening run on a single up the middle as the Mavs took an early 1-0 lead after an error and a single by Brooke Doumer.

An apparently innocent 2-out infield single then sparked the Mavs' first 5-run outburst in the second.

Aislyn Sharp hit that single before Ashley Bradford was plunked setting Wedman up for an RBI single.  She then stole second before a 2-run error gave the Mavs a 4-0 lead.  Torres then hit a 2-run homer to make the score 6-0 before the Pack finally got out of the inning after a Bailey Kleespies double.

The Mavericks continued the onslaught in the third as three walks and two singles gave the Mavericks an 8-0 lead.  Torres then reached on an RBI fielder's choice before a 2-run double by Kleespies put CMU up 11-0.

Meanwhile, Maverick starter Paige Adair allowed just one hit and three baserunners in the first three innings before the Pack bats found their groove in the second time through the order.  The would score three runs in the inning as CMU made the move to Shea Mauser, who retired five straight to end the mercy-rule game.

Adair (3-1) was still credited with the win as she threw 3 1/3 innings allowing just two hits before Mauser gave up just one hit in 1 2/3 innings of relief.

At the plate, the Mavericks finished with 11 hits and drew nine free passes.  Wedman, Doumer, Torres, Kleespies and Sharp, who was hitting in the eighth spot of the lineup, all finished with multiple hits.  Wedman was 3-for-4 and scored two runs while driving in two others.

Game 2

In Game 2, Mauser got the start and gave up just three hits in her first six innings.

Meanwhile, the Mavericks scored their only run in that time without the aid of a hit in the top of the fourth.  With one out in that frame, Hailey Hinson and Taylor Tremelling both reached on back-to-back errors before a wild pitch allowed Hinson to score the opening run.

However, the Mavericks would go on to score three runs in the top of the seventh as back-to-back doubles by Wedman and Doumer made it 2-0.  Torres then hit a 2-run home run to double the lead once again in one play, a play that proved to be a much needed insurance policy.

Trailing 4-0, the Pack would break through for two runs and three hits in the seventh and had the potential game-tying run at the plate before Mauser got a much needed groundout and caught Marissa Piatt looking at a game-ending third strike.  Earlier, Emma Flynn and Isabel Griego singled with one out before Gaby Moreno tripled both home with the ThunderWolves' firs two runs.

However, Melissa Torrez would ground out to CMU's Torres at first as Moreno was held at third before Mauser's second strikeout of the game thwarted the Pack comeback.

The ThunderWolves finished the game with a 6-5 edge in hits but left seven runners on base going just 2-for-14 with runners on base.

Torres had two of Mavs' five hits while Wedman extended her hitting streak to six games with the key 2-out seventh-inning double.

Mauser improved to 7-1 with the complete game victory.

Torres and Doumer were both 7-for-13 (.538) throughout the series and scored 11 combined runs.  Torres also had a double and 11 RBIs throughout the weekend slugging at a 1.538 clip.

Up Next

The Mavericks will now return home for just the second time this season to host a 4-game weekend series against the Colorado School of Mines on Saturday and Sunday.  The Orediggers dropped three out of four in a home series with Fort Lewis and will enter next weekend with 7-10 overall and 4-4 RMAC records.
