FORT COLLINS, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University senior
D'Angelo Foster put together a solid two days of efforts and tallied an NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying score of 6,624 points in the decathlon at the Glenn Morris Multi on Thursday and Friday here at Colorado State University's Jack Christiansen Track.
Foster, who ranks third on the early season national performance list, won both of the running events on Friday bookending his third-place overall position. He won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.74 seconds, just off his own school-record record of 14.68 and then won the 1,500 meters 4:50.15, just off his personal best of 4:49.69.
He also finished second best in three other disciplines and matched his outdoor personal-bests of 1.78 meters (5 feet, 10 inches) and 4.30 meters (14-1.25) in the high jump and pole vault while setting a new PR of 35.59 meters (116-9) in the discus throw during the competition.
Meanwhile, freshman teammates
AJ Crowley and
Dawson Heide finished fifth and sixth in their decathlon debuts. Crowley scored 5,638 points to move into the No. 7 spot in program history while Heide recorded 5,402 points and now ranks ninth in Maverick history. Sophomore
Jay Shuman, a transfer from Wyoming, finished seventh with 4,420 points after stepping off the track in the 1,500 meters.
Shuman finished third in the hurdles with a time of 15.34 seconds and now ranks third in program history in that that discipline. Crowley was right behind in 15.91 seconds to take the No. 6 spot in Maverick lore while Heide finished sixth in that event with a clocking of 16.41 seconds to rank ninth.
The Mavericks also had three contestants in the women's heptathlon with freshman
Sydney Trichler leading the way. She took sixth with 3,894 points to move into the No. 4 spot in program history. Junior
Erika White finished seventh with 3,371 points while freshman
Kailey Paterson, competing in her hometown, was eighth with 3,225. Neither White nor Paterson completed the 1,500 meters.
Trichler cleared 1.51 meters (4-11.5) in the high jump to move into a tie for ninth in program history while Paterson and White finished with long jump efforts of 5.07 meters (16-7.75) and 5.05 meters (16-7) to take over the No. 7 and 8 spots in CMU history, respectively.
Fum McGraw Open (Hammer Throw)
On Friday afternoon, the Fum McGraw Open got underway with the men's and women's hammer throw competitions.
Danielle Pickert finished tenth with a throw of 44.72 meters (146-9), just off her personal best of 45.13 meters (148-1), set nearly two years ago.
In the men's event,
Marshall McKown took tenth at 46.42 meters (152-3) to move into the No. 7 spot in program history, one rung below
Ethen Besier, who finished 11
th with a heave of 46.20 meters (151-7).
Angel Bautista finished 16
th with a mark of 39.00 meters (127-11).
The rest of the Fum McGraw Open, which will feature nearly 50 Mavs will be contested Saturday.
