Salpas breaks 800-meter record in California

AZUSA, Calif.— Colorado Mesa University freshman Vasileios Salpas broke his own school record in the 800 meters with a time of one minute, 49.24 seconds while four combined Maverick sprinters advanced to the finals in the 100, which along with a runner-up finish from Augustine Hancock in the women's hammer throw were the highlights of the Mavericks' Friday efforts here at the Franson Last Chance track & field meet at Azusa Pacific University's Cougar Stadium.

Salpas' time edged the weeks-old Maverick standard of 1:49.35 that he had set last month here during the Bryan Clay Invitational.

Meanwhile, Hancock took second in the hammer throw with an effort of 50.91 meters (167-0) to lead the Mavs' effort in the field events.

In the men's 100, Teo Casados won his heat of the Division II preliminaries with a time of 10.60 seconds while teammate Marik Cummings advanced on time, taking second in the same heat with a mark of 10.71 seconds.

Amaris Mora ran in an earlier heat in 10.84 seconds, taking 14th.

In the women's portion of the event, Hannah Schissler posted a time of 11.77 seconds to win her heat while Sylvia Johansen grabbed the final qualification spot with a mark of 12.05 seconds, matching her season-best.

In the field, senior Addy Kirkpatrick took 12th in the long jump with a mark of 5.45 meters (17 feet, 10 ¾ inches) in what was her final career attempts.  Sophomore Kaitlyn Pearson also competed, taking 18th with an effort of 5.31 meters (17-5.25).

In the high jump, Kaelea Gibson cleared 1.57 meters (5-1.75) and will hope her season-best of 1.70 meters (5-7) holds up to get her in to the NCAA Division II National Championships later this month.

Devin Shea also jumped in two men's jumping disciplines, clearing 2.00 meters (6-6.75) to take ninth in the high jump while finishing 13th in the long jump at 7.10 meters (23-3.5), just ahead of fellow freshman teammate Weston Domich, who cleared 7.06 meters (23-2).

Maverick distance runners Alex Spink and Autumn McQuitty will also run the 10,000 meters late on Friday night.  Their results will be included in Saturday's recap.

Saturday's portion of the meet begins with field events at 10 a.m. PDT (11 a.m. Mountain) and the start of the track events just over two hours later.
