AZUSA, Calif.— Colorado Mesa University freshman
Vasileios Salpas broke his own school record in the 800 meters with a time of one minute, 49.24 seconds while four combined Maverick sprinters advanced to the finals in the 100, which along with a runner-up finish from
Augustine Hancock in the women's hammer throw were the highlights of the Mavericks' Friday efforts here at the Franson Last Chance track & field meet at Azusa Pacific University's Cougar Stadium.
Salpas' time edged the weeks-old Maverick standard of 1:49.35 that he had set last month here during the Bryan Clay Invitational.
Meanwhile, Hancock took second in the hammer throw with an effort of 50.91 meters (167-0) to lead the Mavs' effort in the field events.
In the men's 100,
Teo Casados won his heat of the Division II preliminaries with a time of 10.60 seconds while teammate
Marik Cummings advanced on time, taking second in the same heat with a mark of 10.71 seconds.
Amaris Mora ran in an earlier heat in 10.84 seconds, taking 14
th.
In the women's portion of the event,
Hannah Schissler posted a time of 11.77 seconds to win her heat while
Sylvia Johansen grabbed the final qualification spot with a mark of 12.05 seconds, matching her season-best.
Genesis Nehmer, also took 12
th overall in 12.38 seconds.
In the field, senior
Addy Kirkpatrick took 12
th in the long jump with a mark of 5.45 meters (17 feet, 10 ¾ inches) in what was her final career attempts. Sophomore
Kaitlyn Pearson also competed, taking 18
th with an effort of 5.31 meters (17-5.25).
In the high jump,
Kaelea Gibson cleared 1.57 meters (5-1.75) and will hope her season-best of 1.70 meters (5-7) holds up to get her in to the NCAA Division II National Championships later this month.
Devin Shea also jumped in two men's jumping disciplines, clearing 2.00 meters (6-6.75) to take ninth in the high jump while finishing 13
th in the long jump at 7.10 meters (23-3.5), just ahead of fellow freshman teammate
Weston Domich, who cleared 7.06 meters (23-2).
Maverick distance runners
Alex Spink and
Autumn McQuitty will also run the 10,000 meters late on Friday night. Their results will be included in Saturday's recap.
Saturday's portion of the meet begins with field events at 10 a.m. PDT (11 a.m. Mountain) and the start of the track events just over two hours later.
