GOLDEN, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University men's and women's swimming teams each won six out of eight possible events and have opened commanding leads over the host Colorado School of Mines Orediggers after the first of a 2-day Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual meet on Friday evening here in the CSM Natatorium.
The Maverick women, ranked 11
th nationally, recorded 1-2-3 sweeps in four of the individual events and swept both relays contested Friday with 1-2 finishes on Friday to open a 106-42 lead over the Orediggers in search of a 15
th straight RMAC dual meet win. Meanwhile, the Maverick men had a pair of 1-2-3 individual sweeps and won both relays surging into a 94-54 lead over Mines heading into Saturday's portion of the dual, which will begin at 10 a.m.
Danielle Jefferies was a double-winner for the Maverick women as she led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2 minutes, 11.35 seconds before coming back to take the 200 fly in 2:09.50.
Grace Payton, who later won the 200 back, was second in the 200 IM, touching in 2:13.26 while
Kennedy Bright finished third in 2:13.60.
Candice Rosen was second in the 200 fly in 2:14.87 ahead of
Bella Walters (2:15.78) and
Isabelle Hansson (2:15.97) as the Mavericks claimed each of the first four and five of the top six places in that event.
In between, Payton won the 200 back in 2:08.07 ahead of
Sarah Fillerup (2:09.95) and
Jordyn Beem (2:12.10) while
Sierra Forbord won the 100 free in 52.51 as the Mavericks had each of the top six finishers in that event.
Maddie Pressler (53.52) and
Natalie Saul (54.45) also scored with second and third place finishes.
In the relays, Forbord,
Abbey Desmet, Saul and Pressler won the 200 free in 1:38.73 while the "B" squad of
Samantha White,
Noel Scott,
Logan Anderson and
Celine Sargis was second in 1:41.52 ahead of the Oredigger "A" squad.
The Mavs then capped the night in the 400 medley relay as Payton, White, Jefferies and Forbord finished in 3:57.64. Pressler,
Ginger Bryant, Rosen and Saul finished second in 4:03.52.
Elsewhere,
Robyn Naze finished second in the 500 free in 5:22.87 before White finished second in the 100 breast with a time of 1:07.70.
The Maverick men had 1-2-3 sweeps in both the 200 back and 100 free. Newcomer
Arthur Cury, a Curitiba, Brazil native who just joined the team, won the 100 free in 47.22 seconds, while
Zander Minano (48.14) and
Justin Fell (48.16) were second and third, respectively.
Lane Austin won the 200 back in 1:59.02, ahead of
Jake Simmons (1:59.68) and
Eric Berg (2:00.09).
Cury also won the 200 IM in 1:55.57 while
Mahmoud Elgayar, competing in just his second meet as a Maverick, touched in 1:57.19.
Logan Ellis was also an individual winner as he took the 500 free in 4:50.81.
Minano, Austin,
Parker Giles and
Morgan Bean began the evening with a victory in the 200 free relay. They finished in 1:27.35. Berg, Elgayar, Bean and Fell then won the 400 medley relay to finish the night with a time of 3:30.35.
