Two records fall, two likely book NCAA spots in last chance meet

AZUSA, Calif.— Kammi Merritt and Shirley Weaver both set school records while Joseph Randolph and Hannah Schissler both likely secured NCAA Division II Championship spots in the 200 meters during a day of fast performances for the Colorado Mesa University Track & Field squad on Saturday at the Franson Last Chance meet, hosted by Azusa Pacific University.

Schissler had a phenomenal day, anchoring the Mavs' 4x100-mete relay team to a winning time of 46.14 seconds before taking the individual win in the Division II and III 100-meter final with a career-best effort of 11.73 seconds.  She then posted an improved NCAA provisional qualifying time of 23.59 in the 200 to move up to the No. 19 spot on the national performance list as of Sunday afternoon.

The top 22 declared athletes following Sunday will receive a spot in the May 21-23 NCAA Championships in Emporia, Kansas.  Those fields will be announced on Tuesday.

Randolph also likely booked a trip in the men's half of the event, running to a wind-aided time of 20.70 seconds, good for the No. 11 on the season-long national performance list.  He finished second overall.

Meanwhile, Merritt broke the Maverick record in the 400 meters, running to a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 55.27 seconds, 0.12 quicker than teammate Jordan Burnett had done at the meet two years ago.  That time ranks her second amongst Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference athletes this season.

Meritt also posted a wind-aided career-best of 24.37 seconds in the 200 meters and ran the opening leg on the relay team, which also included Sylvia Johansen and Genesis Nehmer.

The Mavericks also had some fast times in the distance events, most notably from Weaver, who broke her own weeks-old record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, running to an improved NCAA provisional qualifying time of 10:50.52.

Meanwhile, Megan Hodges posted a provisional qualifying time of 4:27.54 in the 1,500 meters, allowing her to move up two spots to second on the program's all-time performers chart.

Brooke Miller and Autumn McQuitty also ran to career-best times and moved up on the list.  Miller finished in 4:31.36 and now ranks fourth in CMU history.  McQuitty finished in 4:39.56 and ranks eighth.

McQuitty also ran to a massive personal-best time of 36:13.50 late on Friday night in the 10,000 meters, more than 94 seconds than her former best.  She moved up a spot to third in program history with that time.

In the 400-meter hurdles, Olivia Langner posted a time of 1:02.29 while Kaitlyn Pearson contested the discipline for the first time, debuting in the No. 9 spot of program history with a time of 1:05.04.

In the field, Kaiya Graves took second in the javelin throw and fourth in the discus to lead the Mavs in both events.  The school-record holder took second in the javelin with a heave of 42.34 meters (138-11) while posted a discus mark of 42.84 meters (140-7).

Kendra Ritzmann took third in the javelin with a career-best of 42.00 meters (137-9) to improve her No. 2 position in program history.  Ritzman also competed in the triple jump, recording a mark of 10.79 meters (35-5) on her opening round attempt.

In the men's sprints, Teo Casados and Marik Cummings both ran in the Division II final of the 100 meters.  Casados finished fourth in 10.64 while Cummings took fifth in 10.70 before running to a season-best time of 21.67 in the 200.

A day after breaking his own school-record in the 800 meters, Vasileios Salpas, improved upon his career-best in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:48.34.  He sits third in CMU history.

In the 10,000 meters, Alex Spink moved all the way to the No. 6 spot of program history with his time of 31:56.36 late on Friday night.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Ryan O'Loughlin shaved more than eight seconds off his No.2 ranked career-best in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, posting a time of 9:25.18.

Aidan Brownell also had a solid time of 52.87 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles.

In the field, Izaak Siefken took second in the javelin with a throw of 61.61 meters (202-1).

Meanwhile, Salem Brunk turned in a mark of 14.33 meters (47-0.25) in the triple jump.
