GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The No. 14 Colorado Mesa men's golf team closed out the regular season tournaments on Tuesday (Apr. 7) with the final round of the Palm Valley Classic at Palm Valley Golf Club and hosted by the Ruidoso Junior Golf Club.
The Mavericks finished the tournament with a 10-under, 278 which is their best 18-hole total of the spring side of the schedule. They finished the tournament in fourth place with a 22-under, 842 which is their best 54-hole score of the spring and second best on the season.
Chico State won the team title with a 39-under, 825 and shot 14-under, 274 in today's final round.
Dylan Everett and
Luke Wagstaff finished as the top golfers for the Mavericks in the final round as they both shot a 3-under, 69.
Everett carded two eagles, three birdies, two bogeys, and a double in his round. He eagled the par-5, 515-yard, No. 2 and then on the heels of his double bogey, he eagled the par-5, 540-yard, No. 11. He was just one of four players in the field that had two or more eagles in the tournament and finished in a tie-for 59
th place.
Wagstaff played his final round bogey free as he finished with 15 pars and three birdies on the day. He played most of the day at 2-under for the round until his final hole of the day where he recorded his third and final birdie. He finished in a tie for 22
nd place at 5-under.
Timmy Cavarno and
Leo Lavalle were the Mavericks No. 3 and No. 4 golfers on the day as they tied with matching 2-under, 70s. Lavalle finished in a tie for fifth place on the individual leaderboard at 10-under while Cavarno matched his teammate with an eagle on No. 11 in his final hole of the day.
Colorado School of Mines' Liam Allan and Chico State's Naoki Easterday tied for medalist honors with matching 12-under, 204s.
The Mavericks will compete in the RMAC Championships in Boulder City, Nev. beginning on Sunday April 19. The tournament will be held at Boulder Creek Golf Course.
