BOULDER CITY, Nev. – The Colorado Mesa men's golf team fought the elements and are still in contention for the team title after the second round of the RMAC Championships on Monday (Apr. 20) afternoon at Boulder Creek Golf Club.
Conditions started out ideal with light to no wind but deteriorated as the day progressed. Winds kicked up to 15-20mph with gusts reaching as high as 32mph.
Colorado Mesa dropped a pair of spots on the team leaderboard after firing a 7-over, 295 as a team. The Mavericks are seven strokes back of team leader Colorado School of Mines and just two strokes behind second place Fort Lewis.
Four of the seven teams in the tournament are ranked in the Clipp'd Scoreboard top-50.
Leo Lavalle and
Timmy Cavarno tied for the team lead on the day with matching 1-over, 73s.
Lavalle had a rough start to the round but was able to right the ship late. He opened with a double bogey on his first hole but was able to birdie his final two holes and shot 2-under in his final nine holes with three birdies and a bogey.
He is in a tie for second place on the individual leaderboard, four strokes behind the leader.
Cavarno finished at 1-over on the day after four birdies and five bogeys. He opened with birdies on two of his first four holes and is now No. 19 on the leaderboard.
Dylan Everett (2-over, 74) and
Luke Wagstaff (3-over, 75) rounded out the Maverick scorers in the round. Everett remains in a tie for eighth in the medalist hunt at 3-under for the tournament.
Colorado School of Mines' Liam took the lead on the individual leaderboard with a 4-under, 68 in today's round and now sits at 10-under for the tournament.
The tournament will conclude tomorrow morning with tee times scheduled to begin at 7am. High winds are forecasted which has forced the move of the tee times.
