CANYON, Texas— Teo Casados set the Colorado Mesa University record in the 100 meters while
Hope Matteson won the high jump as
Augustine Hancock and Casados both set improved NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying marks to lead a partial Colorado Mesa University Maverick squad in Saturday's portion of the Jo Meaker Classic, which wrapped up here at West Texas A&M University's Track & Field Complex.
The Mavericks also combined for marks on the Mavs' all-time top 10 charts, including Casados' new record time of 10.46 in the 100 meters. The junior also ran to an improved NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying mark of 20.92 seconds (20.99-altitude adjusted) in the 200 and leads the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference performance list.
His 100 time was just under
Elijah Williams' official record of 10.48, which had stood for just over three years. Casados had posted a wind-aided time of 10.42 seconds open the season.
Teammate
Marik Cummings also had a wind-legal career-best of 10.52 seconds in the ensuing heat and continues to rank third in program history.
Casados continues to sit second just behind Williams (20.88) in Maverick history in the 200.
Amaris Mora (21.43),
Justin Blanton (21.48) and Cummings (21.57) all posted solid times as well as Cummings moved into the No. 4 spot of program history with his time, performed right at the legal wind limit of 2.0 meters per second. Mora and Blanton's times were wind-aided.
Mora, Cummings,
Quentin Hartel and Casados also combined for a solid time of 40.74 seconds in the 4x100-meter relay, seventh fastest in program history.
In the field,
Antone Higgs turned in a third place finish in the long jump with a mark of 7.49 meters (24-7) while
Hayden Moreno finished seventh at 7.00 meters (22-11.75).
Freshman
Van Chambers also managed a pair of top-10 finishes in the throws, taking eighth in the hammer with a mark of 48.46 meters (159-0) to improve his No. 10 position on CMU history. Chambers also placed tenth in the discus throw with a heave of 41.83 meters (137-3)
Women's Recap
Matteson cleared 1.62 meters (5 feet, 3 ¾ inches) on her first attempt at the height to match her season-best and also took sixth in the long jump with an season-best effort of 5.56 meters (18-3).
Hancock recorded a mark of 54.23 meters (177-11) to take second in the hammer throw. She also placed fifth in the discus throw with a mark of 43.51 meters (142-9).
Elsewhere in the women's half of the meet,
Gaby Horton led the Mavs in both the 100 and 200 meters with times of 11.91 and 24.20 seconds after winning both events at home just eight days before. She,
Serenity Burnett-Perry, Sylvia Johnansen and
Kammi Merritt also posted a solid sixth place time of 46.34 seconds in the 4x100-meter relay to go under the NCAA Championship provisional cutoff for the second straight meet.
Meanwhile, Burnett-Perry posted a wind-aided career-best of 12.09 in the 100 while Merritt ran to a time of 24.89 in the 200 to rank seventh in CMU history.
Hannah Schissler also finished in 24.95 seconds in a separate heat and now ranks ninth in CMU lore.
Freshman
Kaitlyn Pearson also ranks tenth in program history in the 100-meter hurdles after placing eighth in 14.87 seconds.
Merritt also had a strong fourth place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, running the lap and over the ten hurdles in 1:02.96.
Lexie Williams also had a ninth place time of 1:04.35 while
Jessie Schaffer set a career-best of 1:04.45.
