Pearson, Schultz move into No. 5 spot of CMU history

Siefken records second place finish in javelin throw

CANYON, Texas— Izaak Siefken led the Colorado Mesa University track & field contingent with a second place finish in the javelin throw while freshmen Kaitlyn Pearson and Austin Schultz moved into the No. 5 spots of program history in the heptathlon and shot put, respectively, highlights of the Mavs' Friday performances at West Texas A&M's Jo Meaker Classic.

Siefken recorded a toss of 60.64 meters (198 feet, 11 inches) as he went over the 60-meter mark for the third time this season.  Teammate Seth Sherwood also had a season-best effort of 55.86 meters (183-3) to place fifth.

Meanwhile, Schultz, a redshirt freshman, moved up a spot on the Mavs' all-time top 10 list with his shot put effort of 14.87 meters (48-9.5), good enough for sixth place on the day.

In-form Garrett Searls also had a solid pole vault effort of 4.60 meters (15-1), tying for fourth place in the event.

Pearson led the Maverick women, scoring 4,447 points to finish fifth in a field of 15 heptathletes.  That mark puts her fifth in program history and currently leads the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference performance list.

The freshman, contesting the event for the first time as a Maverick, posted marks of 5.23 meters (17-2) in the long jump, 30.31 meters (99-5) in the javelin throw and a time of 2:32.67 in the 800 meters.  Her javelin throw mark was a personal best.

Katie Thomson also broke the 4,000 point mark, taking 12th with 4,006 while Atahlia Mills finished 14th with 3,633 points, despite not finishing the 800 meters.  All three Maverick heptathletes booked a spot in the RMAC Championships.

Elsewhere, Kaiya Graves took fifth in the javelin throw with a mark of 36.41 meters (119-5) while Kylie Mayer had a career-best of 33.05 meters (108-5) to place seventh.

The meet will conclude on Saturday, when a majority of the running events and additional field events will be contested.
