INDIANAPOLIS— Sophia Bains claimed a lane in the championship finals while six other Colorado Mesa University swimmers qualified for the consolation finals through preliminary heats in three different events on Thursday morning here at the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships.
Two Maverick divers also qualified for the afternoon's consolation finals.
Here's a breakdown of the preliminary round action from Thursday.
The finals will begin at 5:30 p.m. EDT (3:30 p.m. Mountain) and all of the action is streamed on NCAA.com.
100 Butterfly
Kiara Borchardt took 15
th place in the preliminary heats to qualify for the evening consolation final. She touched in 55.26 seconds.
Meanwhile, sophomore teammate
Amber Siverts set a career-best time of 55.79 seconds in her first career NCAA Championship swim to finish 28
th. She was seeded 34
th on the pre-meet psych sheets.
The Maverick men also had two entrants in the event as school-record holder
Dejan Urbanek finished 26
th in 48.01 seconds while team captain
Andrew Scoggin turned in a career-best of 48.08 seconds to take 27
th. Scoggin also moved up a spot to fifth in program history with his effort.
400 Individual Medley
Sophia Bains turned in a time of 4:19.87 to qualify fifth for the evening finals. She matched her pre-meet seed and will swim in her third consecutive NCAA Championship final. Bains placed sixth in 2023 and seventh a year ago.
Tori Bartusiak swam in the same heat and finished 27
th overall with a time of 4:31.07.
Haven Hinkle then followed up with a time of 4:31.42 in the final preliminary heat, placing 29
th overall.
The Mavericks also had two men qualify for the consolation final.
Luka Samsonov emerged in 11
th place with a time of 3:53.16, just off his career-best of 3:53.03. He was seeded 19
th and was not predicted to qualify for the finals, based solely on the pre-meet psych sheets.
Meanwhile, freshman
Ben Vester will join Samsonov with the chance to earn Second Team CSCAA All-America honors after qualifying 13
th in 3:54.91. He was seeded tenth coming in.
Gavyn Tatge will be the second alternate after turning in a preliminary round time of 3:56.51, 18
th fastest.
Jacob Troescher took a declared false start.
200 Freestyle
The Maverick women will be well represented in the consolation final as
Kendyll Wilkinson,
Olivia Hansson and
Katerina Matoskova all claimed lanes.
Wilkinson, the Mavs' school-record holder, finished her preliminary heat in 1:49.29 to tie for ninth overall. Hansson qualified 11
th in 1:49.37, just off her career-best of 1:49.23 while Matoskova touched in 1:49.64 to qualify 14
th overall.
Ada Qunell is the second alternate after finishing 18
th in the preliminaries with a time of 1:50.13.
Hanna Sasivarevic also swam, placing 29
th in 1:51.02.
Kuba Kiszczak finished 22
nd to lead four Maverick men in the event. He touched in 1:37.12.
Richard Schmiedefeld was 29
th in 1:38.37 while
John Walgast won his heat in a season-best time of 1:38.59 to finish 31
st, a huge 16-spot improvement over his pre-meet No. 47 seed time of 1:39.22. Schmiedefeld also improved over his No. 31 pre-meet seed.
Braden Felio rounded out the Maverick efforts with a time of 1:39.28. He finished 36
th after coming into the meet seeded 45
th.
3-Meter Diving
Ryan Campbell and
David Roethlisberger both qualified for the consolation finals. Campbell scored 451.40 points on his 11 preliminary round dives and finished 11th in that round. Roethlisberger scored 422.40 points to qualify 15th.
The consolation finals will begin at arppoximately 2:45 p.m. EDT (12:45 p.m. Mountain).
400 Medley Relay
The Mavericks will also swim the 400 medley relays at the end of Thursday night's session.
The CMU women are seeded third and are the defending national champions. The Maverick men are seeded eighth and will compete in the last heat.
