GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Butterfliers
Ada Qunell and
Guillaume Guth broke the oldest and newest Colorado Mesa University swimming records as they got off the Mavericks to a strong Friday night start. The Mavs then rolled to 13 event wins, 31 NCAA Division II Championship "B" cut times and 13 more national qualifying diving marks during another impressive day of action at the TYR/CMU Invitational at El Pomar Natatorium.
The Mavericks won all but one of the events throughout the day as the Mavericks extended their team leads heading into the final day of the meet on Saturday.
The CMU men scored more than 600 points on Friday alone and now have 1,300, good for a 583-point lead on the Colorado School of Mines. The Maverick women now have 862 to lead NCAA Division I Northern Arizona by 165. Mines is third in the women's standings with 542.
Qunell continued her strong meet winning the first swimming final of the night, taking the 100-yard butterfly in 54.43 seconds. Her altitude-adjusted time of 54.33 seconds bested Danielle Jefferies' former school record of 54.41, which had stood since the 2019 NCAA Championships. Qunell, who set the Mavs' 200 free record on Wednesday, also defeated Northern Arizona's Elsa Musselman, who had won the event in each of the last three years. Musselman is also the pool and meet record holder.
Minutes later, Guth claimed the men's 100 fly in 46.78 seconds (46.68-converted), out-touching teammate
Oskar Sawicki, who finished in 46.86 seconds (46.76-converted). Sawicki, who ranks second in program history had swum to an altitude-adjusted school-record time of 46.87 seconds in the first heat of the morning preliminary round before Guth lowered the record to 46.76 (converted) in the ensuing heat setting the stage for the evening dual and yet another Maverick record.
Both men joined Qunell and
Kiara Borchardt as NCAA "B" cut qualifiers. Borchardt took fourth in the women's race, touching in 54.95 seconds (54.85-converted).
Meanwhile,
Kenya Meyer broke both the pool and meet record in the 1-meter diving final contested during the afternoon. She scored 483.50 points over 11 dives to lead six CMU women who surpassed the national qualifying standard of 390 points.
Emma Lence was second with 465.50 while
Jenna Hurley took third with 445.20 as part of the Mavs' 1-6 sweep.
The Maverick men also took the top five spots in the evening's 3-meter competition as seven different Mavs set national qualifying scores.
Jax Juarros led the group with 574.00 points to complete the meet's diving sweep while edging
Ryan Campbell for the win. Campbell scored 571.40 points.
David Roethlisberger finished third with 539.10.
After
Tori Bartusiak,
Haven Hinkle and
Gabby DeLuna all set NCAA "B" cut times to place second, fourth and fifth in the women's 400 individual medley, the Mavs returned to their winning ways in an impressive way in the men's half of the event.
Luka Samsonov claimed the win in 3:54.59 (3:49.59-converted) to take over the No. 3 spot in program history and the top spot in Division II this season pending other weekend meets.
Maverick freshman
Micah Moore took second in 3:56.04 (3:51.04-converted) and now ranks fourth in CMU history and as high as second in the country.
Three other Maverick men in
Aron Jonsson,
Ethan Gluck and
Gavyn Tatge had also set NCAA "B" cut marks in the preliminary heats as Jonsson turned in a mark of 3:58.40 (3:53.40-converted) to rank seventh in CMU history and as high as third in the country behind his teammates. Jonsson also finished third in Friday's final with a time of 3:59.93. Gluck took fourth in 4:02.24 after posting a time of 4:00.12 (3:55.12-converted) in the morning.
The Mavs also fared well in the women's 200 free as
Olivia Hansson claimed her third event win in as many nights, posting a time of 1:50.62 (1:49.42-converted) as one of the Mavs' five NCAA provisional qualifiers.
Hanna Sasivarevic was the second of those, posting a personal-best time of 1:51.20 (1:50.00-converted) to improve her No. 10 position in CMU history and take second in the evening final.
Kendyll Wilkinson, Linnea Sjoberg and
Abby Uhl all set NCAA provisional qualifying times in both the preliminary and finals as well.
The Maverick men also took the top two spots in the 200 free as Germans
Ben Vester and
Jonas Friess led the charge. Vester took the win in 1:37.58 after posting a quicker and possible national-leading time of 1:36.77 (1:35.57-converted) in the prelims. That effort puts the sophomore in fourth on the Mavs' all-time charges. Friess, a transfer from Saint Ambrose (Iowa), ranks ninth in CMU history at 1:36.80 (converted).
Conrad Fawcett also finished fourth in the final, touching in another NCAA "B" cut time of 1:39.52 (1:38.32-converted) while freshman
Torsten Hokanson set a NCAA provisional mark of 1:40:32 (1:39.12-converted) during the morning preliminary round.
In what was the closest race of the night, Maverick junior
Antonia Leese won the women's 100 breaststroke in 1:02.41, beating Mines rival Jordan Tierney by a single hundredth. Leese was the Mavs' lone NCAA qualifier and "A" finalist in the event.
The Maverick men were much more dominant, taking each of the first six places. Jonsson led the way in 54.12 seconds after moving into the No. 4 spot of CMU lore with a preliminary round effort of 54.08 seconds (53.98-converted).
Marcos Otero is now tied for fifth after posting a mark of 54.17 (54.07-converted) in the prelims.
Otero then took second in 54.45 in the final ahead of
Alix Perras and
Brodie Khajuria, who had posted a NCAA "B" cut effort during the morning.
Taylar Hooton then won the women's 100 backstroke in 54.37 seconds (54.27-converted) as she and freshman
Abby Uhl both set NCAA qualifying marks. Uhl finished third at 56.04 seconds but had finished the prelims in 55.71 seconds (55.61-converted).
Richard Schmiedefeld then won the men's 100 back in 48.34 seconds (48.24-converted), to rank seventh in CMU history while adding his name to the national qualifying list. The Mavs took five of the top six spots in the race.
After the diving break, the Mavericks then swept the 400 medley relay wins.
Hooton, Leese, Borchardt and Qunell won the women's race in 3:41.57 (3:41.17-converted) to easily qualify for the national meet while winning the event by 3.58 seconds over the NAU Lumberjacks. The Maverick men's "B" team of Schmiedefeld, Otero, Moore and
Holden Convertino were the declared as the winners after the "A" squad was disqualified after setting an apparent meet, pool and school record for an early take-off. Samsonov did set a legal 100 back NCAA "B" cut time of 48.30 (48.20-converted) as the lead-off leg on that team.
Convertino also set a NCAA "B" cut time of 20.04 seconds to rank fifth in CMU history during a morning time trial.
