GOLDEN, Colo.— David Roethlisberger and
Luka Samsonov both set natatorium records and combined for four event wins as the nation's fifth-ranked Colorado Mesa University men's swimming and diving team claimed a 132-109 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory over No. 24 Colorado School of Mines on Saturday here in the CSM Natatorium.
Roethlisberger swept both the 1 and 3-meter diving events and set a natatorium record score of 335.55 points on the taller board while surpassing the NCAA Championship qualifying standard in both 6-dive competitions.
Meanwhile, Samsonov won the 400-yard individual medley in a record time of 4:10.39 after teaming with
Marcos Otero,
Oskar Sawicki and
Richard Schmiedefeld for victory in the 200 medley relay at the start of the swimming session, which followed the morning diving competitions.
Schemiedefeld also won the 50 free while
Holden Convertino (100 free) and
Aron Jonsson (200 Breast) were also victors for the Mavs, who extended their now nearly decade old RMAC dual meet winning streak to 14.
The Mav men were competing in their first dual and third overall meet of this season while the Mines men slipped to 3-1 overall.
The Maverick divers paved the way to victory early on as Roethlisberger won the 1-meter with 318.45 points over six dives while
Wyatt Hermanson took second with a score of 298.50 points. Both easily went over the NCAA qualifying standard of 285 points.
Roethlisberger then won the 3-meter event as part of a 1-2-3 Maverick sweep, with his aforementioned facility record score. Reigning RMAC Diver of the Year
Ryan Campbell took second with 330.68 points while Hermanson was third with 323.85. All three went over the NCAA standard of 295 points.
In the swimming session, the Mavericks won the 200 medley relay in 1:32.86 while the "B" team took third in 1:34.00.
The Orediggers then went 1-2 in the 1,000 freestyle ahead of Maverick sophomore
Ethan Gluck, who finished third in 9:56.03.
CMU newcomer
Jonas Friess then took second in the 200 free with a time of 1:44.26 before Schmiedefeld sprinted to the 50 free win in 21.27 seconds while Convertino took second in 21.37 seconds.
The Mavs then scored maximum points in the 400 IM as Samsonov finished in 4:10.39, ahead of
Miles Moran (4:11.31) and Jonsson (4:13.13) in the 1-2-3 sweep.
Later, Convertino won the 100 free while Schmiedefeld finished third in 47.50 seconds.
Samsonov then fared well in his third swim, taking second in the 100 back with a time of 51.77 seconds while newcomer
Ethan Viescas was third in 52.02.
Mines' Vlad Kazakin, who had earlier won the 1,000 free, then set a pool record time of 4:39.48 as part of a 1-2-3 Oredigger sweep in the 500 free ahead of the Mavs'
Conrad Fawcett, who finished fourth in 4:52.96.
The Orediggers also got the win in the 100 fly although Maverick freshman
Micah Moore finished a strong second in 50.96 seconds ahead of
Caleb Dutton (52.10) and Sawicki (52.30) as the Mavs scored nine points with a 2-3-4 finish.
Jonsson then won the 200 breaststroke in 2:04.64 while the Mavs'
Miles Moran took second in 2:09.86 to help CMU clinch the dual.
The Orediggers then won and took second in the 400 free relay to close out the 13-event dual. The Mavs' "B" team of
Jacob Sampson, Moran,
Braden Felio and Friess finished third in 3:10.41.
The Mavericks will next compete against NCAA Division I Utah in an inter-divisional dual on Halloween afternoon (Friday, Oct. 31) in Salt Lake City.
