Women's Basketball
  • The Maverick women will open 2025 when they resume Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play with home games against New Mexico Highlands and Adams State on Thursday evening and Saturday afternoon, respectively.
  • The Mavericks are currently 7-4 overall and 2-2 in RMAC play.
  • They wrapped up 2024 by splitting games at the Nova Southeaster Invitational in Florida before the Holiday break.
  • The Mavs defeated Northwest Missouri State, 64-45 on Dec. 19 before falling 95-81 to then national poll No. 8 Pittsburg State (Kan.) on Dec. 20.
  • Maverick junior Olivia Reed Thyne was named as both the RMAC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week for those efforts after scoring 78 points and snagging 24 rebounds in the two games, good for a 39-point and 12-rebound per game average.
  • She broke a 24-year old CMU record by scoring 45 points in the Pittsburg State game. 
  • Reed Thyne has been in double figures for scoring in all of the Mavs' 11 games this season and has recorded seven double-doubles.
  • She leads the RMAC in rebounding (11.8), field goal percentage (.577), free throw percentage (.881) and is second in scoring (22.0).
  • New Mexico Highlands is 5-5 overall and 2-2 in the RMAC.  The Cowgirls wrapped up 2024 by winning two of their last three.
  • Adams State, which will play at Westminster on Thursday, is 8-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play.  The Grizzlies have won four of their last five.
Men's Basketball
  • The Mavericks ended 2024 on a high note defeating Central Oklahoma and Pittsburg State (Kan.) in non-conference games at the San Antonio Holiday Classic on Dec. 17 and 18.
  • Those wins improved the Mavericks' overall record to 6-6.
  • Christopher Speller recorded a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double in the Dec. 17 win over Central Oklahoma and went on to be named as the RMAC Defensive Player of the Week.  He also had five steals in the two wins.
  • Will Mortimore had 18 points in the Central Oklahoma win before recording a 12-point, 13-rebound double-double in the win over Pittsburg State.
  • The Mavs (0-4 RMAC) will look for their first conference wins when they resume conference play with two home games this week.
  • They will host New Mexico Highlands (7-5, 0-4 RMAC) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. before taking on Adams State (6-6, 1-3 RMAC) on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Women's Wrestling
  • The Mavericks are ranked sixth in the latest NWCA NCAA Rankings and will be the No. 6 seed in this weekend's National Dual Meet Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
  • The Mavs will wrestle Sacred Heart in the opening round of the 16-team, bracket-style dual tournament, which will be contested on Friday and Saturday and will include seven teams currently ranked inside the top 10 of the national rankings.
  • CMU is 9-1 in dual meets this season after going 5-1 in a busy day of action at the Desert Duals in Las Vegas on Dec. 21 before the holiday break.
  • Madison Heinzer led the Mavericks at the Desert Duals, going 6-0 at 103 pounds.  The freshman out of San Jose, California was named as the RMAC Wrestler of the Week and is the third Maverick freshman to have won that award this season.
  • Heinzer is 16-2 this season and is a perfect 10-0 in duals.
  • The Mavs have five nationally-ranked individuals in Jenessis Martinez (#8, 103 lbs.), Sophia Cornish (#7, 110 lbs.), Alejandra Valdiviezo (#6, 124 lbs.), Gretchen Donally (#3, 160 lbs.) and Jayleen Sekona (#4, 207 lbs.).
Men's Wrestling
  • The Maverick men will also open up 2025 in dual meet tournament this weekend, traveling to Gunnison and Western Colorado for the annual Tracy Borah Duals.
  • Maverick back-ups and redshirts will also compete in the Western Colorado Open on Friday.
  • The Mavs wrapped up the 2024 portion of the season with a strong tenth place team finish at the Midwest Classic on Dec. 14-15.
  • Forty three total teams competed in what is regarded as "mini-nationals".
  • The Mavs had four individual placers, a group led by Dayson Torgerson, who took fifth at 125 pounds.
  • Ryan Wheeler finished sixth at 157 pounds and advanced to the semifinals before having to bow out of the tournament due to injury.
  • Gabriel Carranza (197) and Tyler Doyle (285) both took seventh.
  • The Mavericks are currently ranked 23rd in the NWCA's NCAA Division II Rankings.
  • The Mavs have six nationally ranked individuals in Dayson Torgerson (#7, 125 lbs.), Oran Huff (#15, 133), Ryan Wheeler (#8, 157), Jason Bynarowicz (#15, 184), Gabriel Carranza (#13, 197) and Tyler Doyle (#11, 285).
  • The exact schedule for Saturday's Tracy Borah Duals has been changed from its original form and not yet finalized.
Swimming & Diving
  • The Mavericks wrapped up 2024 with good performances at the UNLV FINIS Invitational, contested in Las Vegas from Dec. 16-18.
  • The Maverick men finished second out of seven teams with 565 points and ahead of four Division I teams in Cal Poly, Cal Baptist, Pacific & Wyoming.  Only host UNLV finished higher than the Mavs with 634 points.
  • The CMU women took fourth out of eight teams with 311 points, defeating Division I foes Cal Baptist, Pacific and Cal Poly.
  • The Maverick men won five events and had five second and five third place finishes as well.
  • 2024 Olympian Harry Stacey broke the CMU record in the 100 Free with a national-leading time of 42.84 seconds while Andrew Scoggin won four events, including both backstrokes while combining with Stacey and others for a pair of relay wins.
  • Agata Naskret won the 200 Back to lead the CMU women.
  • The Maverick women surged five spots back into the No. 1 spot of the December edition of the monthly CSCAA Top 25 Dual Meet Poll.  The Maverick men are ranked third.
  • Both Maverick teams also sit atop the Swicloud Championship meet rankings.
  • After competing in a pair of invitational meets to end 2024, the Mavericks return to dual meet action this weekend, traveling to Salt Lake City for a Friday afternoon encounter at Big XII Conference foe Utah.
