ALAMOSA, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University athletes combined to win a meet-high ten events at the ASU Qualifier #1, contested Friday evening here in the Adams State University High Altitude Training Center.
The relatively small meet, which also included athletes from the host Grizzly program, New Mexico Highlands University and Trinidad State Junior College, is the first of two weekend competitions with Saturday's ASU Qualifier #2 will be contested as a separate meet.
The Mavs also had multiple strong distance running efforts from a separate contingent at a meet in Reno, Nevada on Friday.
The Maverick men won five events, including the first three as
Marik Cummings led a group of eight Mavs across the finish line in the 60 meters inju8 6.87 seconds, just off his earlier season-best of 6.84.
Aidan Brownell then claimed the in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.36 seconds, edging teammate
Trevor Kendall, who took second in 8.39. Brownell has now won both of his collegiate starts after posting a time of 8.34 at last month's Mountaineer Open in Gunnison.
Jacob Dalrymple then set a time of 15:52.54 at more than 7,500 feet of elevation, a mark that puts him ninth on the Mavs' all-time top-10 performers list. The effort was even more impressive considering he ran all 25 laps by himself as the only man to start the race.
The Maverick men also claimed victory in two field events as
Antone Higgs continued his strong season start in the long jump with a winning leap of 7.32 meters (24 feet, 0 ¼ inches). The Bahamian and Colby (Kan.) Community College transfer has now won all three jumping events he has contested this season.
Freshman
Van Chambers was also victorious in the weight throw, posting a mark of 14.94 meters (49-0.25) as the only man in that competition. He also took third in the shot put with a heave of 12.16 meters (39-10.75), finishing just behind fellow freshman
Kaiden Major, who took second in the 5-man field with a mark of 12.91 meters (42-4.25).
Other notable efforts included a second place 800 meter time of 1:57.62 from sophomore
Dylan Campbell and a third place time of 22.49 seconds in the 200 from
Quentin Hartel.
The Maverick women also won five events as
Katie Thomson claimed victory in both the shot put and high jump. The 2024 RMAC pentathlon champion recorded a mark of 12.04 meters (39-6) to lead the Mavericks to the top four places in the shot put after clearing 1.43 meters (4-8.25) in the high jump, just ahead of freshman teammate
Kaitlyn Pearson, who got over the bar at 1.40 meters (4-7).
Elsewhere, In the field, school record holder
Augustine Hancock continued to shine in the weight throw, winning the event with a mark of 16.68 meters (54-8.75). Fellow Mav
Aaliyah Bos placed third with a heave of 14.45 meters (47-5), moving to ninth in program history.
Hancock (11.67m/38-3.5) and Bos (11.09m/36-4.75) also took second and third in the shot put, respectively, behind Thomson.
The Mavs also had the second through ninth place finishers in the long jump as
Addy Kirkpatrick led the way with a jump of 5.30 meters (17-4.75).
Waycee Harvey took third with a leap of 5.24 meters (17-2.25).
On the track,
Gaby Horton won the 200 by a wide margin in 24.86 seconds after freshman
Jessie Schaffer claimed her first collegiate win, taking the 60-meter hurdles in 9.72 seconds, ahead of teammate
Rimari Facey (10.65).
The Mavs also had six of the eight finalists in the 60-meters as
Kammi Merritt took second in 7.76 seconds to match her December effort. Teammate
Sylvia Johansen had a faster time of 7.74 in the preliminary round but opted out of the finals.
Saturday's meet will begin at 9:30 a.m.
