DUPONT, Wash.— Senior
Cole Beyer fired a 6-under par round of 66 and won the Bishop Invitational individual title by eight shots as the Colorado Mesa University men's golf team tied for first place in the team standings before being declared to have finished in second place after coming in on the short end of dropped score playoff tiebreaker on Friday here at The Home Course.
Beyer, who hails from Woodburn, Oregon, finished his three rounds in 12-under par 204, the third best 54-hole score in program history to record his first outright collegiate win after sharing medalist honors at the Palm Valley Classic as a sophomore. His effort was also the second best in relation to par in CMU lore. He made seven birdies and just one bogey in Friday's round after firing rounds of 67 and 71 on Thursday.
Brandon Bingaman had the only two better tournament scores of 202 and 203, the first of which is also the school record in relation to par (-14).
As a team, the Mavericks finished at 858 (-6), tied with Cal State East Bay atop the standings after posting an even par round of 288 on Friday. The Pioneers and Mavs finished three shots ahead of CSU Pueblo, ranked 22nd in the latest national poll. The Mavs have now defeated the ThunderWolves in each of CMU's two tournaments thus far.
Hawai'i Hilo was fourth at 865 (+1) while North Idaho College and Simon Fraser tied for fifth at 866 (+2).
In the final round, CMU's
Timmy Cavarno and
Luke Wagstaff both carded scores of 73 on the Par 72 course while
Leo Lavalle finished with a 76.
Baptiste Laborde carded a 77.
Lavalle and Wagstaff both finished as part of 5-way tie for 13
th place in the individual standings with their 54-hole totals of 215 (-1). Cavarno moved up to a tie for 50
th with his best round of the tournament and recorded a tournament score of 225 (+9). Laborde was tied for 66
th at 229 (+13).
A total of 18 teams and 92 players played in the event, which was hosted by St. Martin's University.
The Mavs will stay in the Pacific Northwest to play in the Western Washington Invitational on Monday and Tuesday in Bellingham.
