AZUSA, Calif.— 400-meter runner
Jordan Burnett and the women's 4x100-meter relay team, which she anchored, set new Colorado Mesa University track and field records, highlights of the day for the Mavericks on Saturday at the Franson Last Chance Meet here at Azusa Pacific University's Cougar Stadium.
The efforts came after
Brooke Miller and Kristin Williams set new Maverick records during Friday evening's Distance Carnival portion of the 3-day meet.
Serenity Burnett-Perry,
Gaby Horton,
Sylvia Johansen and Burnett started Saturday's track session with a relay time of 45.71 seconds as the quartet lowered their former season best and school record time of 45.77 seconds from last month's Maverick Invite #2. In the process, the Mavericks moved up to as high as 18
th on the NCAA Division II Championship performance list pending other weekend results but will still likely need to go faster in Sunday's Cal State LA Very Last, Last Chance Meet in order to receive a bid to the May 23-25 NCAA Division II National Championships.
Burnett, a junior out of Fairplay, Colorado, then came back to break
Sierra Arceneaux's Maverick record in the 400 with a time of 55.39 seconds, good for third place in her heat and eighth overall. Arceneaux's former record was 55.52 seconds from April, 2023.
Burnett, who also holds the CMU indoor record of 55.45 seconds, was running the event for the first time this season and put herself on the national performance list but will rank just outside the nation's top 50 with her time from Saturday.
Other highlights for the Mavericks included a second place finish from Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Champion
Teo Casados in the 200 meters. He finished in 21.04 seconds to match his conference title-winning team and moved up slightly to as high as 35
th on the national performance list.
Kelsey Montague also turned in a notable effort of 52.02 seconds to finish third in the men's 400-meter hurdles. That time matched his altitude-adjusted season-best, which he used to win the RMAC title with an actual and school-record clocking of 41.91 seconds.
In the field, national triple jump leader
Miller Jones had another strong series placing third overall and as the top collegiate athlete with an effort of 15.68 meters (51 feet, 5 ½ inches), just off his RMAC title-winning mark of 15.84 meters (51-11.75) from two weeks ago. He went over 15 meters on all five of his recorded attempts.
Augustine Hancock also improved upon her personal best in the discus throw, uncorking an effort of 44.97 meters (147-6) to finish fourth as the Mavs went 4-5-6- in the event. Teammates
Christina Palmer (44.23m/145-1) and
Heather Yackey (43.40m/142-4) were just behind.
