AZUSA, Calif.— Colorado Mesa University sophomore
Katie Thomson scored 2,742 points through four events of the heptathlon on Thursday afternoon here at the Franson Last Chance & Multis meet, hosted by Azusa Pacific University.
Thomson, who is 61 points shy of her eventual silver medal-winning pace of 4,872 points at last month's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships is in fifth place overall and third amongst NCAA Division II collegiate athletes hoping to improve their national ranking for selection purposes into the May 23-25 national meet in Emporia, Kansas.
The Cheyenne, Wyoming native was just slightly off her RMAC Championship performances in all four of Thursday's disciplines, two of which were new career-bests.
On Thursday, she recorded a time of 15.37 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles before clearing 1.46 meters (4 feet 9 ½ inches) in the high jump. She then had a shot put performance of 11.91 meters (39-1) in the shot put and concluded her day with a time of 26.94 seconds in the 200 meters.
Friday's events include the long jump, javelin throw and 800 meters.
The remainder of the meet will also get underway on Friday with preliminary round heats in the 100 meters and 100/110-meter hurdles as well as an evening distance carnival.
Brooke Miller (800 meters) and
Kirstin Williams are expected to run in that.
