AZUSA, Calif.— Brooke Miller and
Kirstin Williams turned in Colorado Mesa University record times on Friday evening during the Distance Carnival portion of the Franson Last Chance and Multis meet hosted by Azusa Pacific University.
Miller began the evening by winning her section of the 800 meters in a time of two minutes, 10.27 seconds, placing eighth in the event overall. The time was more than a second faster than her own Maverick record of 2:11.32 from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships, less than two weeks prior. Miller's Friday night time was also a slight improvement over her altitude-adjusted mark of 2:10.68, but will still likely not be enough to qualify her for the NCAA Championships as she passed just one other runner on the national performance list to move into 35
th, pending other yet to be reported results.
Meanwhile, Williams also placed eighth in the 10,000 meters with a time of 35:47.13, which edged Lauren Lipski's 6-year old school record of 35:48.29 set at the 2018 Mt. SAC Relays. However, the clocking is still not as fast as her altitude-adjusted RMAC Championship time of 35:21.93, which had her ranked 26
th on the national list.
Earlier in the day, CMU sophomore
Katie Thomson completed the heptathlon, finishing fifth with 4,570 points, 302 off her RMAC Championship silver-medal winning and career-best score of 4,872, which ranks her 27
th in the country as of Friday evening.
Thompson had a career-best mark of 5.60 meters (18 feet, 4 ½ inches) in the long jump to begin the day but was well off her personal bests in the javelin throw and 800 meters, recording a throw of 29.33 meters (96-2) before running to a time of 2:34.73.
The Mavericks will continue the meet on Saturday with a host of jumpers, sprinters and throwers in action.
