GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Zace Buckhold won his second silver medal of the meet while team newcomer
Izaak Siefken won a silver of his own to lead the Colorado Mesa University men's track and field team to another solid day at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday here at the CMU Track & Field Complex.
The Mavericks also received a third place finish from
Levi Hoenninger in the decathlon and had three fourth place finishes as they stand in second place of the Day 2 team standings with 69 ½ points through nine of the meet's 21 total events.
Buckhold, who placed second behind teammate
Eddie Kurjak in the high jump on Friday, set a career-best and improved NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying long jump of 7.39 meters (24 feet, 3 inches), just a centimeter or half-inch away from the winning mark. Freshman
Miller Jones also placed fourth in the event at 7.20 meters (23-7.5) while Kurjak placed seventh with a leap of 7.04 meters (23-1.25).
Seifken, a former University of Illinois baseball player, who joined the Maverick track and field squad earlier this month, threw the javelin 58.77 meters (192-10). The Mavs also received a fourth place finish from
Dawson Heide and a sixth-place mark from
Seth Sherwood. Both set new personal bests as Heide threw 58.12 meters (190-8) while Sherwood posted a mark of 56.34 meters (184-10) to move up a spot to sixth behind Heide on the Mavs' all-time charts.
Hoenninger claimed the bronze in the decathlon with a score of 6,281 points as he moved into the No. 5 spot of Maverick history as the Mavs received 14 team points in the event with fellow freshman
Evan Atkin placing fourth with a score of 6,019 points. He now ranks seventh in program history.
Jameson Moore also took sixth with 5,479 points.
The Mavs also picked up 2 ½ team points in the pole vault as
Garrett Searls tied for sixth with an outdoor career best of 4.41 meters (14-5.5) as he moved up to fifth in CMU history.
Meanwhile, the Mavericks qualified three men for the finals in the 200 meters and another in the 800 meters.
Elijah Williams was the top overall qualifier for Sunday's 200-meter final, blazing to a time of 21.07 seconds in the last heat of the preliminaries.
Teo Casados (21.43) and
Justin Blanton (21.51) also qualified as they moved into the No. 2 and 3 spots of program history behind Williams, who has the Mavs' school-record of 20.88 seconds from 2022.
Freshman
Kyle Towne was second in his heat of the 800, qualifying fifth overall with a career-best time of 1:53.77 as he moved up a spot to fifth in CMU history.
Fellow freshman
Jayden Thulson (1:54.92) and
Dylan Campbell (1:55.46) took 13
th and 15
th in the prelims, respectively. Thulson now ranks seventh in program history while Cambell also set a career-best time.
The 3,000-meter steeplechase final was also contested on Saturday and saw
Kevin DeGree place 16
th in 9:57.06.
Earlier,
Logan Hafey led three Mavs in the 110-meter hurdle prelim with an 11
th place time of 15.62 seconds.
The Maverick women also stand in second place of the team standings, heading into Sunday's action, which will get underway at 10:30 a.m.
