SPEARFISH, S.D.— Freshman
Miller Jones set a field house record in the triple jump while
Eddie Kurjak and
Zace Buckhold went 1-2 in the high jump to lead the Colorado Mesa University Maverick men's track and field team to a jump event sweep and a program-record 106 team points, good for a strong third place overall finish at the 2024 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Indoor Championships, which wrapped up on Saturday here at Black Hills State University's Donald E. Young Center.
Justin Thompson had won the long jump on Friday night.
The Maverick men claimed nine medal-winning performances in six different events on Saturday as they surpassed the 2022 team's team scoring tally of 101 points, which was good for a second place finish that year.
The Mavs scored 59 of their 106 team points in the jumps, but also received significant support from the sprinters
Elijah Williams claimed two of those medals, taking second in the 200 meters and third in the 60 while
Kelsey Montague took third in the 400. The Mavs also finished second in the 4x400-meter relay as Montague and freshman
Levi Hoenninger, who took fourth in the heptathlon, teamed with
Amaris Mora and
Dylan Campbell to claim the silver.
Jones broke a 17-year old facility record with his winning triple jump mark of 15.55 meters (51 feet, 0 1.4 inches), just two centimeters or ¾ of an inch off his RMAC-leading best of 15.57 meters (51-1), which ranks him fifth in Division II as of Saturday night. Kurjak also claimed one of his two medals of the day with a third-place mark of 14.77 meters (48-5.5). Buckhold was fourth at 14.58 meters (47-10), just one centimeter off his personal-best, while freshman
Salem Brunk took sixth with a season-best mark of 14.22 meters (46-8).
Meanwhile, Kurjak was busy winning the high jump with a clearance of 2.13 meters (6-11.75) while Buckhold cleared a personal-best mark of 2.10 meters (6-10.75).
On the track, Williams set a time of 6.78 seconds to win the bronze in the 60 meters before coming back to claim the silver in the 200 with a time of 21.62 seconds.
Kade Christensen also finished sixth in the 60 (6.93) and seventh in the 200 (24.64) while
Teo Casados limped to an eighth-place finish in the 60 before being unable to start the 200 after claiming the No. 1 seed for the final in Friday's preliminary round.
Meanwhile, Montague took third in the 400 with a time of 49.55 seconds before helping the Mavs to the ninth fastest 4x400-meter relay time in program history (3:22.99). Montague now has three individual and five overall career RMAC medals to his credit.
In the 800, the Maverick freshman duo of Campbell and
Kyle Towne took ninth and tenth, respectively. Campbell won his section in 1:57.06 to move into the No. 7 spot of program history while Towne ran in the next section to a time of 1:57.78. He was ranked seventh in CMU history heading into the day and is now eighth.
The Mavs also picked up 11 team points in the heptathlon as Hoenninger scored 4,615 points to place fourth while moving all the way to fourth on the Maverick all-time performer charts behind three all-Americans in Spencer Jahr, current Mav
Dawson Heide and D'Angelo Foster. Hoenninger set new career-bests in all three of Saturday's events and five of the seven disciplines. He posted a 60-meter hurdle time of 8.97 seconds, a pole vault clearance of 3.60 meters (11-9.75) and a 1,000 meter time of 2:48.84 to rank fourth in CMU lore.
Teammate
Logan Hafey finished sixth with 4,427 points to rank tenth in CMU heptathlon history while
Evan Atkin (4,366) and
Jameson Moore (3,974) added seventh and eighth place finishes.
The Mavs also scored in the shot put as
Nathan Jones took seventh with a career-best throw of 15.37 meters (50-5.25), moving up two spots to third in Maverick history for the discipline.
The Colorado School of Mines snapped a 4-year UCCS title run as the Orediggers won their first team title since 2018 with 145 points to edge the Mountain Lions' total of 141.83. The Mavs' total of 106 was nearly double fourth place CSU Pueblo's tally of 55 while Chadron State rounded out the top five of the 13-team men's meet with 47 ½.
CMU will now await Tuesday's official announcement of qualifiers for the NCAA Division II Championships, which will be contested on Mar. 8-9 in Pittsburg, Kansas. The Mavs have four athletes who rank in the top seven nationally and could qualify as many as three other men.
The Maverick women are also sure to have at least one national qualifier in high jumper
Josie Coffey, who won her fourth career RMAC title on Saturday to lead the Maverick women to a third place finish as well.
