SPEARFISH, S.D.— Colorado Mesa University's
Josie Coffey won her fourth career Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference high jump championship as the Maverick women's indoor track and field went 1-2 in that event while picking up a third-place finish in the 400 meters and a school record time in the 800 meters, highlights of the day for CMU, which finished a strong third in the final team standings at the 2024 conference championship meet here at Black Hills State University's Donald E. Young Center.
Coffey, who has now won three of the last four RMAC indoor titles, cleared 1.73 meters (5 feet, 8 inches), just a centimeter off her own school-record, to claim the gold medal. Meanwhile,
Hope Matteson took the silver after clearing a NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying 1.70 meters (5-7) to move into second place on the Mavs' all-time indoor performers list.
Jordan Burnett also claimed a medal, taking the bronze in the 400 meters with a time of 57.65 seconds. Burnett also took sixth in the 200 at 25.50 seconds while
Gaby Horton took fifth in both the 60 and 200 meters with times of 7.65 and 25.18 seconds, respectively.
Meanwhile,
Brooke Miller set the Maverick record in the 800 meters, scoring a team point with an eighth-place time of 2:16.05 to go under
Mica Jenrette's former record of 2:16.59, set in the pentathlon at the 2021 NCAA Division II National Championships. Miller's time was also a NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying time.
The Mavs also picked up six team points in the triple jump as
Kylee Kielian finished fifth with a mark of 11.52 meters (37-9.25), two places better than fellow freshman
Venesa Handzhiyska, who leapt 11.33 meters (37-2.25) to take seventh.
Natalie Smythe also set a career-best mark of 11.01 meters (36-1.5) to finish tenth in that event.
Preslee Moser also scored behind Coffey and Matteson in the high jump, placing seventh with a clearance of 1.59 meters (5-2.5). Meanwhile,
Kaelea Gibson and
Jordan Brockman both cleared 1.54 meters (5-0.5) to take 11
th and 12
th, respectively.

Katie Thomson rounded out the day with a sixth-place time of 4:00.60.
Notably, distance runner
Kirstin Williams also finished ninth in the 3,000 meters with a season-best time of 10:21.73, moving up a spot to third in program history.
In Saturday's shot put, Virigina Tomon placed tenth with a throw of 12.23 meters (40-1.5) while school record holder
Christina Palmer was 11
th at 12.18 meters (39-11.5).
The Maverick women finished with 19 team-scoring efforts through the weekend meet, scoring 81 points to in the top three for the fourth straight year. They also claimed five medals, including two golds.
The Colorado School of Mines Orediggers defended their title with 154 points while UCCS was second with 119. The Mavericks were well clear of Western Colorado (56) and the rest of the 14-team field.
The Maverick men also took third with a program-record 106 team points as high jumper Eddie Kurjak and fieldhouse record setting triple jumper Miller Jones allowed the Mavs to sweep the jumping events throughout the meet.
The Mavericks will now await Tuesday's announcement of the NCAA Division II Championship qualifiers, who will continue their season at the Mar. 8-9 national meet in Pittsburg, Kan.
Coffey will likely be the only Maverick woman to be selected although Thomson has an outside chance, currently ranking 17
th on the national performance list in the pentathlon as of Saturday night.
