SPEARFISH, S.D.— Justin Thompson completed the night with a winning long jump effort of 7.49 meters (24 feet, 6 ¾ inches) as the Colorado Mesa University Maverick men scored all 17 of their first day team points in that event at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday here at the Black Hills State University's Donald E. Young Center.
The Mavs had four of the top eight finishers in that event as they stand in fourth place of the team standings through five scored events.
Thompson's victory was his first long jump and second overall RMAC title of his impressive 5-time all-America and now 10-time all-RMAC career. Teammate
Eddie Kurjak was fifth at 7.14 meters (23-5) while
Zace Buckhold and
Miller Jones also recorded team points with seventh and eighth place finishes. Buckhold jumped 7.09 meters (23-3) while Jones recorded a leap of 7.05 meters (23-1.5).
The Maverick sprinters also had a solid day as they qualified three men for the finals in both the 60 and 200 meters and another in the 400.
In the 60-meter preliminaries,
Elijah Williams won his heat in 6.75 seconds to earn the No. 2 seed for Saturday's final while
Teo Casados finished in 6.84 seconds to finish second in the heat and fourth in the overall preliminary round.
Kade Christensen also reached the finals as the No. 6 seed with a time of 6.87 seconds in the ensuing heat.
Casados also claimed the top seed in the 200 meters, winning the second heat in 21.61 seconds after Williams had won the first heat in 21.69 to gain the No. 2 seed. Christensen also reached the finals with a time of 22.43 seconds in the prelims.
In the 400,
Kelsey Montague won his heat in 50.04 seconds to gain the second seed for Saturday's final.
Elsewhere, Maverick freshmen
Evan Atkin and
Levi Hoenninger are in fourth and fifth place of the heptathlon through four events. Atkin scored 2,613 points in the 60 meters, long jump shot put and high jump while Hoenninger tallied 2,576 while setting new career-bests of 10.15 meters (33-3.25) and 1.73 meters (5-8) in the shot put and high jump, respectively.
Logan Hafey and
Jameson Moore are also in position to score team points and sit seventh and eighth in the heptathlon standings. Hafey has 2,476 points while Moore scored 2,422.
The Mavs were also represented in the weight throw with
Cameron Kalaf finishing tenth with a throw of 16.12 meters (52-10.5), edging teammate
Nathan Jones, who took 11
th with a mark of 15.98 meters (52-5.). Kalaf moved up one spot to ninth and ahead of Moore on the Mavs' all-time top 10 performers list.
Other Maverick efforts included a tenth-place finish from
Marik Cummings (6.96) in the 60 meters and a 17
th place time of 7.02 in the same event from
Beau Thornton, who later took 16
th in the 200 with a time of 22.88 seconds.
Jeremiah Reed (23.03) and
Amaris Mora (23.65) also competed in that event, finishing 17
th and 18
th.
The Maverick women also had a gold medalist in pentathlon champion Katie Thomson on Friday.
