KEARNEY, Neb.— The Colorado Mesa University men's and women's tennis teams both suffered 7-0 losses to the nationally-ranked Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats on Saturday morning here in neutral-site indoor action at the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center.
The Maverick men wrapped up their 4-match weekend here with a 2-2 mark and fell to 3-4 overall as the No. 20 Bearcats improved to 2-0.
The CMU women are now 4-5 overall after going 1-3 on the trip, which included match-ups with William Jewell, host Nebraska-Kearney, and Rockhurst. The 17
th-ranked Bearcats are now 2-0.
Saturday's duals were played concurrently.
CMU's lone win came at No. 2 doubles of the men's dual as
Emil Hultman and
Philemon Jabin scored a 6-2 win over Michael Delebois and Rafal Bednarczuk. Hultman and Jabin have now won four straight decisions and went 3-0 with one match left unfinished in doubles play over the weekend.
However, the Bearcats won the other two doubles matches, squeaking out a 7-6 (7-5) win on Court 3.
They also swept the singles matches although Maverick sophomore
William Leschig took Mason Meier to the absolute limit in a battle of regionally-ranked players at No. 2 singles. Meier, tenth in the ITA's Central Region rankings, eventually pulled out the win, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (13-11) over Leschig, ranked 18
th in the West Region.
The Bearcat women also swept the singles matches after taking all three doubles matches as well.
Kristen Thomas led the Maverick effort, but dropped a 6-1, 6-7 (7-9), 1-0 (10-8) decision at No. 3 singles as the Mavericks rested their normal No. 1 and 2 players in singles play allowing freshman and normal No. 3
Devyn Rodriguez to make her first start at No. 1. Rodriguez fell to Central Region No. 19 Carolina DeOliveira, 6-1, 6-2 as her 3-match winning streak was stopped.
The Mavericks will head outdoors next week playing three duals in the Phoenix area next Friday and Saturday.
