GLENDALE, Ariz. — Colorado Mesa's women's tennis team won a pair of duals Friday (Feb. 16) to open a road trip to the desert, handling Arizona Christian 6-1 after knocking off Western New Mexico 5-2.
Five singles wins and claiming two of three doubles matches for that team point allowed the women's team to win going away.
Makenna Livingston went 2-0 on the day, moving up a spot to play No. 1 singles against the Firestorm and winning 6-3, 6-3. Devyn Rodriguez slid into the No. 2 spot for a 6-1, 6-3 victory for her second win of the day and Kristin Thomas won her No. 3 singles match 6-3, 6-4 for her second victory.
Julianna Campos and Audrey O'Rear won a pair of three-setters in the final two spots, with Campos claiming a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 victory at No. 5 and O'Rear wrapping up the dual with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-4), 10-3 win at No. 6.
In their victory over Western New Mexico, the Mavericks gave up the doubles point, but won four of the five contested singles matches and picked up the final point by default at No. 6 singles.
Livingston clinched the dual with her 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles over Mann-Ling Li. Before Livingston's victory, CMU was up 3-2 after Rodriguez swept her No. 3 singles match 6-0, 6-0 and Thomas claimed a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 5.
Campos picked up the forfeit victory at No. 6. Delia Maier put an exclamation point on the dual with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory at No. 4. Issy Coman dropped the No. 1 singles match 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.
Colorado Mesa faces Ottawa University at 10 a.m. Saturday (Feb. 16) at Valley Vista High School in Surprise.
