SURPRISE, Ariz. – Colorado Mesa women's tennis took advantage of a default tiebreaker to win the doubles point, then got singles wins from
Devyn Rodriguez and
Julianna Campos to put away Ottawa University of Arizona for a 4-0 victory at Valley Vista High School.
The Maverick women improved to 7-5 in duals during the 2023-24 season with the victory while finishing the Arizona road trip at a perfect 3-0 for the weekend.
Colorado Mesa benefitted from facing an OUAZ squad with only five players. The hosts were victorious on the No. 1 doubles court, with Martina Antich and Katherine Frayre Busani defeating the Maverick duo of
Devyn Rodriguez and
Julianna Campos, 7-5.
CMU earned a blowout win on court two, however, with
Makenna Livingston and
Delia Maier bageling the OUAZ duo of Cassidy Clark and Jelizaveta Govrova, 6-0. With OUAZ defaulting the third doubles court, the Mavericks had the decisive court win to earn the doubles point in their back pocket from first serve.
OUAZ also defaulted court No. 6 on singles, giving CMU a 2-0 lead immediately once singles play commenced, and Rodriguez and Campos were able to avenge their doubles loss by claiming the decisive singles victories for the Mavericks.
Julianna Campos was the first to finish on court No. 4, defeating Clark 6-1, 6-1. Freshman
Devyn Rodriguez, playing on the No. 1 singles court for just the second time in her career, secured a 6-4, 6-3 win over Busani to lock things up.
Delia Maier battled past a first-set tiebreaker to take control on court two, leading OUAZ's Antich 7-6 (5), 4-0 before that match went unfinished.
Kristen Thomas (court three) and
Audrey O'Rear (court five) also played incomplete matches due to the clinch.
The Maverick women have nearly two weeks until their next dual, but it will be an important one as CMU will face a PacWest conference opponent for the first time. CMU will travel to California to face Biola on Friday, March 1 before facing Azusa Pacific the following day. The women will then travel to Utah Tech for a Saturday morning dual on March 9.
