ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— The Colorado Mesa University men's 4x400-meter relay team of
Kelsey Montague,
Elijah Williams,
Justin Blanton and
Teo Casados smashed the school-record with a NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying time of 3:14.83, the highlight of the day for a partial Maverick indoor track and field squad on Saturday at the New Mexico Team Open.
The Maverick quartet's time was well under than the nearly year-old Maverick record of 3:17.40, ran on Feb. 3, 2023 here at the Albuquerque Convention Center and came less than 24 hours after Casados broke the CMU 200-meter record in Friday's portion of the meet. Casados and Montague were also on that squad last season.
Meanwhile, the Maverick women received an impressive 800-meter effort from
Brooke Miller, who placed seventh in a time of 2:17.25. She surged all the way from the No. 10 spot in CMU history to second with that effort, a 5.5-second improvement over her former career-best of 2:22.75 from last month.
The Mavs also had some fine efforts in the men's 800 meters as
Jayden Thulson (1:57.05) and
Kyle Towne (1:57.15) both moved into the top 10 of all-time Maverick performers. Thulson now ranks sixth while Towne is seventh in Maverick history.
In the miles, newcomer
Kirstin Williams moved into the No. 5 spot of women's program history with a time of 5:22.08 while
Kevin DeGree also moved into the No. 8 spot of the Mavs' men's history, completing that race in 4:27.19.
Kade Christensen also led a group of five Maverick men in the 60 meters, finishing his preliminary heat in 7.00 seconds to finish 24
th in a field of 65.
Gaby Horton finished 23
rd in the women's 60 meters with a time of 7.81 seconds.
The Mavericks set three school-records at the Mines Winter Classic & Multi in Golden, Colorado.
The CMU squad will be in action again next Saturday at the Big Red Machine Open at Western Colorado University in Gunnison.
