COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University track & field standouts
Kaelea Gibson and
Izaak Siefken swept the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's Field Athlete of the Week awards, conference officials announced on Wednesday afternoon.
The athlete of the week awards are the first of their respective careers.
Gibson won the women's award after setting a series of three new career-bests while winning the high jump last Friday at the High Desert Dental Maverick Invitational that CMU hosted. She ended up with a clearance of 1.70 meters (5 feet, 7 inches), a mark that leads this season's RMAC performance list. The NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying effort also puts her in a tie for seventh on the national list.
Her clearance also moved her up four spots to second in Maverick history behind only five-time all-American Josie Coffey.
Gibson, a senior from Green River, Wyoming, had a previous career-best of 1.64 meters (5-4.5) and surpassed that mark during her jumping series.
Meanwhile, Siefken recorded a strong javelin throw mark of 66.30 meters (217-6) to place fourth in the top section of the discipline at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin. Although his mark was slightly off his school-record throw of 68.58 meters (225-0) from earlier this season, it was still more than 10 feet further than any other RMAC javelin thrower this season.
Siefken, who is the defending RMAC Champion in the event, holds an 18-foot lead over the rest of the conference and currently ranks him ninth on the Division II performance list this season.
He is a redshirt senior from Broomfield, Colorado.
