GOLDEN, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University high jumpers
Eddie Kurjak and
Josie Coffey and both broke their own school records while multi-event standout
Dawson Heide smashed another CMU standard as all three posted event wins on a solid day of efforts for partial Maverick indoor track & field squad at the Mines Winter Classic & Multi.
Kurjak also broke a 16-year old Steinhauer Fieldhouse record as he cleared 2.20 meters (7 feet, 2 ½ inches) on his opening attempt at that bar, a 5-centimeter/2-inch improvement from his former co-school record leap of 2.15 meters from last month. In the process, Kurjak moved into a tie for second on this year's NCAA Division II national men's performance list while breaking the facility record of 7 feet, 1 ¾ inches that had stood since 2008. Unattached athlete Oliver Harsany had held that mark.
Meanwhile, Coffey cleared 1.74 meters (5-8.5) in the women's high jump, breaking her Maverick indoor record of 1.72 meters (5-7.75), set nearly three years ago in her collegiate debut on Feb. 5, 2021. The redshirt junior now sits in a fifth place tie on the women's national performance list.
Teammates
Zace Buckhold and Kaelaea Gibson also had solid fourth place finishes as Buckhold cleared 2.02 meters (6-7.5) while Gibson got over 1.61 meters (5-3.25) to set a new career-best in the women's event.
Meanwhile, Heide finished the 60-meter hurdles in 7.91 seconds, well under
Zayden Davis' former record of 8.00 seconds flat. Heide, who ranks second in Division II for the heptathlon this year, is now tied for fourth on the hurdling performance list, even with the altitude-adjustment penalty that raised his time to 7.93 on the qualifying list.
Elsewhere, freshman
Salem Brunk finished second in the men's triple jump with a mark of 14.00 meters (45-11.25) as he moved into the No. 9 spot of program history.
Nathan Jones led the Mavs in the men's weight throw, putting up a mark of 15.02 meters (49-3.5) while
Logan Hafey scored 4,100 points to place fifth as the first of three CMU heptathlon finishers.
Justin Thompson, who won the long jump on Friday, also raced the 60 meters on Saturday, posting a time of 7.13 seconds.
On the women's side, school record holder
Augustine Hancock finished third in the weight throw with a heave of 17.18 meters (56-4.5) to eclipse the NCAA provisional qualifying standard for the second straight meet while
Heather Yackey set a new personal-record of 14.20 meters (46-7.25). Maverick newcomer
Christina Palmer was slightly better than that, placing tenth with a mark of 14.53 meters (47-8) while freshman
Lily Lofland cracked into the Maverick all-time top 10 with a throw of 14.07 meters (46-2), a centimeter better than Yackey's former career-best.
Natalie Smythe also finished third in the triple jump, turning in an effort of 10.81 meters (35-5.75).
On the track, freshman
Venesa Handzhiyska led five Mavs in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.19 seconds while fellow freshman
Rimari Facey ran the 60-meter hurdles in 9.66 seconds to finish tenth in the preliminary round.
The Mavericks also had a school-record setting effort in the men's 4x400-meter relay at the New Mexico Team Open in Albuquerque.
CMU will continue the indoor season next Saturday at the Big Red Machine Open in Gunnison and Western Colorado University's Mountaineer Fieldhouse.
