GOLDEN, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University's
Justin Thompson won the men's long jump while teammates
Eddie Kurjak,
Venesa Handzhiyska, Christian Palmer and
Katie Thomson all turned in runner-up finishes on a strong day of action
Thompson posted a mark of 7.54 meters (24 feet, 9 inches), just two centimeters off his earlier season-best that ranks him second in Division II while Kurjak took second with a leap of 7.33 meters (24-0.75) to move into the No. 2 spot of program history behind Thompson. Kurjak has now set NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying marks in all three jumping events this season.
CMU freshman
Miller Jones also had a strong and improved provisional qualifying leap of 7.28 meters (23-10.75) to finish fourth and rank third in CMU history.
Meanwhile, Handzhiyska moved in to the No. 2 spot of Maverick history in the women's long jump, placing second with a NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 5.78 meters (18-11.75).
Elsewhere, Palmer, the Mavs' shot put school record holder, took second with a throw of 13.13 meters (43-1) while
Augustine Hancock moved into the No. 7 spot of program history with a sixth-place throw of 11.98 meters (39-3.75).
The Maverick women also shined in the pentathlon as Thomson scored an improved NCAA provisional qualifying 3,615 points to place second while
Jordan Brockman took third with an NCAA provisional qualifying score of 3,333.
Sophie Lindauer (3,254) and
Hope Matteson (3,194) also finished in the top five. Lindauer's mark also surpassed the NCAA provisional qualifying standard of 3,242.
Thomson's mark was 32 points than her previous career-best of 3,583 and was partially fueled by a new career-best of 5.52 meters (18-1.5) in the long jump, which puts her in a tie for ninth in program history. She fared best in the 14-woman field with that mark.
Meanwhile, Brockman was right behind at 5.51 meters (18-1) and cleared a career-best 1.62 meters (5-3.75) to move into a tie for eighth in program history.
In other action, CMU's
Dawson Heide cleared 4.55 meters (14-11) in the pole vault while
Nathan Jones placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 14.33 meters (47-0.25) to move into the NO. 5 position of CMU lore.
Meanwhile,
Levi Hoenninger scored 2,546 points in the first four heptathlon events to stand in fifth place heading into Saturday's portion of the 7-discipline event.
Logan Hafey is in fifth with 2,458.
CMU also had a contingent of runners at the New Mexico Team Open in Albuquerque.
