ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Teo Casados smashed the Colorado Mesa University record in the men's 200 meters as he and three other Maverick runners set a combined five NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying times while taking full advantage of running on a banked track on Friday during the first day of action at the New Mexico Team Open.
Casados blazed to a time of 21.21 seconds in one lap around the notoriously-fast Albuquerque Convention Center track placing eighth in a field of 99 starters in the unseeded portion of the event while breaking
Elijah Williams' former school-record of 21.33.
Later in the evening, Williams posted a solid mark of 21.39 seconds to finish 11
th in the invitational portion.
Both went well under the NCAA provisional qualifying standard of 21.67 seconds even with the altitude-adjustment penalty of 0.02 seconds.
CMU teammates Amaria Mora,
Jeremiah Reed and
Quentin Hartel also moved up or into the top-10 of Maverick history as Mora ran a time of 21.98 seconds to place 39
th in the unseeded heats while moving into fourth in Maverick history. Reed (22.24) and Hartel (22.25) now rank eighth and ninth, respectively.
On the women's side,
Jordan Burnett and
Gaby Horton both set NCAA provisional qualifying times.
Burnett finished ninth out of 97 starters in the unseeded heats of the 200 meters with a time of 24.39 seconds to improve her No. 3 ranking time in CMU history. Horton placed 18
th in 24.72 seconds and now ranks fourth as she and Burnett both ran under the provisional qualifying standard of 24.81.
Burnett then set another NCAA provisional qualifying and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference-leading time of 55.69 seconds in the 400 meters, just off her school-record time of 55.45. She placed seventh in a field of 67.
In the men's 400 meters,
Kelsey Montague placed 20
th in a career-best 49.32 seconds and continues to sit second in CMU history.
In the distance events,
Kirstin Williams posted a time of 10:30.05 in the women's 3,000 meters to move into the No. 4 spot of CMU lore while
Lauren Hodges finished in 10:43.39 to rank eighth in CMU history.
Kevin DeGree and
Jacob Dalrymple were amongst a large group of disqualified runners in the men's 3,000 meters after a lap counting error negated the entire heat.
The Mavericks will continue the large meet on Saturday and
also had a group of field and multi-event athletes at the Colorado School of Mines' Winter Classic & Multi on Friday.
