CHADRON, Neb.— Jordan Brockman won the bronze medal as one of four Colorado Mesa University team point scorers in the long jump events while the Maverick track and field teams advanced 11 others to Sunday's sprinting and hurdling finals, highlights of a solid first day of action at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships which got underway Friday.
Brockman finished third with a personal-best leap of 5.64 meters (18 feet, 6 inches) in the women's long jump and also put strong efforts in the first day of the heptathlon.
Taeryn Trumper also scored two team points with a seventh place finish while
Zace Buckhold and
Justin Thompson placed fourth and fifth in the men's portion of the event.
Meanwhile, the Mavericks have three of the top six heptathletes as
Mica Jenrette is in position to win a third straight title. She stands second with 2,970 points, just one shy of the Colorado School of Mines' Avery Wright, who has 2,971.
Jenrette outscored Wright by 36 points on Day 2 of the heptathlon less than two weeks ago at the Maverick Invite & Multi.
Brockman, who also set a personal-best time of 14.71 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles to open the 7-event competition in the lead, is in fifth with 2,792 points while Katie Thompson sixth with 2,567.
In the sprints,
Sierra Arceneaux and
Jordan Burnett emerged as the top overall qualifiers in the women's 100 and 400 meters, respectively.
Arceneaux turned in a time of 11.68 seconds while Burnett clocked a time of 56.36.
Kira MacGill also qualified for the 1,500 meter final after running to a preliminary heat time of 4:32.29 while
Averie Griffith got through the 400-meter hurdle preliminaries in 1:05.72.
On the men's side,
Elijah Williams led four Maverick qualifiers in the men's 100 meters. He won his heat and qualified second overall in 10.51 seconds.
Teo Casados also qualified in 10.78 seconds, good for the second automatic qualifying spot in the initial heat, while
Beau Thornton and
Kade Christensen both qualified as wild cards on time with marks of 10.72 seconds.
In the men's 400 meters,
Justin Blanton won the opening heat to qualify third overall in 48.59 seconds.
The Maverick men also qualified two men for the 400-meter hurdle final as
Kelsey Montague finished his preliminary heat in 54.48 seconds while
Logan Hafey was clocked in 55.24 in the same heat. Both set new personal-bests.
In the long jump, Buckhold also set a personal-record of 7.26 meters (23-10) to place fourth, one spot ahead of Thompson, the Mavs' school-record holder, who placed fifth with a mark of 7.21 meters (23-8).
Trumper jumped 5.31 meters (17-5.25) in the women's half of the event while
Kierra Arceneaux just missed out on a scoring position, placing ninth with a leap of 5.15 meters (16-10.75).
Kiana Jackson (5.10 meters/16-8.75) and
Lily Nieslanik (5.03m/16-5) also represented the Mavs, placing 11
th and 13
th, respectively.
Meanwhile,
Kash Bradley (6.40 meters/21-0) and
Rese McClinton-El (6.34 meters/20-9.75) competed for the Maverick men, placing 14
th and 15
th, respectively.
In the throws,
Augustine Hancock finished 13
th in the women's hammer throw with a new personal best mark of 42.46 meters (139-4).
Jameson Moore led three Maverick men in the hammer, placing tenth with a throw of 50.55 meters (165-10).
Cameron Kalaf took 21
st at 43.91 meters (144-1) while
Hayden Riley fouled on all three of his attempts.
