Box Score DENVER— Colorado Mesa University redshirt freshman
Jamison Pfingston went a perfect 4-0 to lead the Maverick men's tennis team's efforts at the MSU Denver Invitational on Saturday and Sunday here at the Assembly Athletic Complex and City Park Tennis Courts.
He went 3-0 and advanced to the B Singles Draw final, which was not played, while teaming with
Jandre van Wyk for a B Doubles victory.
Due to multiple weather delays, action went late into the night Saturday and throughout the day Sunday before some of the draws were left unfinished.
Throughout the individual tournament, eight different Mavericks went a combined 11-9 in singles play and 3-3 in doubles action. All eight won at least one match in the Mavs' first competition of the 2022-23 season.
Pfingston defeated Colorado College's August Knox, MSU Denver's David Kijak and MSU Denver's Dayton Fisher in singles play, winning a 10-8 tiebreaker over Fisher in the semifinals.
Meanwhile, in the A Singles draw,
Tyler Landen went 2-1 advancing to the semifinals with victories over CC's Nate Beerman and MSUD's Alejandro Jimenez before being downed by the Roadrunners Juho Kantola in the semifinals. Kantola also took out the Mavs'
Jorge Abreu in the quarterfinals after Abreu had won his first round match over CC's Aiden Little.
Maverick newcomer
Emil Hultman also went 2-1 in the A Singles pool, winning a pair of consolation matches in the back draw after losing to main draw finalist Jeanloup Auzias in his opening match.
Diogo Manzano and van Wyk were also 1-1 in B Singles action while
William Leschig went 1-2 in the A draw brackets.
Manzano and Scheck also won their only B Doubles match and advanced to the finals, where they were slated to play van Wyk and Pfingston.
The Mavericks will begin team play next Friday and Saturday facing Texas opponents St. Mary's, UT Permian Basin and Lubbock Christian at the Pueblo Duals at Pueblo's City Park.
