AUSTIN, Texas— Colorado Mesa University senior
William Leschig made program history becoming the first Maverick men's tennis player to ever claim Academic All-America
® honors, selected by College Sports Communicators.
The Buckholz, Lower Saxony, Germany native and business administration major was a third team pick as one of the top 18 NCAA Division II student-athletes in the country, generally divided into three 6-man units. However, due to a tie in the voting, seven men were named to the second team while Leschig was one of five men on the third team.
At the time of nomination, he held a 3.94 cumulative grade point average, which went up slightly to 3.95 after he recorded a perfect 4.0 in his final year at CMU.
On the court, he led the 2025-26 edition of the Mavericks with 33 wins, including a 17-10 doubles record with partner
Henry Scheck. The duo posted a 13-8 record in the top flight of during team duals and went 3-2 against nationally-ranked opponents.
They were ranked as high as 11
th and finished 24
th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's NCAA Division II Doubles rankings.
In 2025, the duo earned Third Team All-Pacific West Conference honors when the Mavs were affiliate members of that league. They played as independents in 2026 and were not eligible for conference awards.
Throughout his career, Leschig racked up 50 doubles wins, tied for 11
th most in program history. He also had 96 overall wins, including 46 in singles.
He went 16-14 in singles play this year.
Academically, Leschig earned CSC Academic All-District honors in all three years he was eligible for the award (2024-26). He has also earned the ITA Scholar-Athlete award in each of the previous three years and will win a fourth such award later this summer.
He was also an Academic All-Pac West honoree for three straight years from 2023-25.
