Leschig wins twice as Mav men fall to Vulcans

WAIPIO, Hawai'i— Senior William Leschig partnered with Henry Scheck for a 6-1 doubles win in the top flight before claiming a No. 4 singles thriller in Colorado Mesa University's men's tennis dual against the University of Hawai'i Hilo Vulcans on Sunday afternoon here at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

The Vulcans won the other two doubles matches and the other five singles affairs as they claimed the 6-1 team win to improve to 6-7 overall.

The Mavericks fell to 6-15.

Leschig and Scheck, who are ranked 16th in the latest ITA NCAA Division II National Doubles Rankings, were 6-1 winners over the all-Spanish duo of Angel Fonseca and Sergi Tintore at No. 1 doubles.

However, the Vulcans won the other two doubles matches to take momentum into singles which they rode to four straight-set and five overall wins.

Leschig came from behind in his singes win over fellow German Matthieu Wehner, dropping the first set 6-4 before rallying to take the second 6-3.  With the team dual already decided, Leschig then won the match tie-breaker, 12-10 to claim his 16th singles and team-leading 32nd overall win of the campaign.

Emil Hultman also took his No. 3 singles match to a third set, falling 6-4, 6-7 (6-8), 1-0 (10-4) to Fonseca.

Notably, Scheck played a nationally-ranked Vulcan foe in singles, falling 6-2, 6-3 to No. 52 Jamie Paquet, who had partnered with Jaden Williams to get past Diogo Manzano and Hultman in the decisive No. 2 doubles match, which ended 6-4.

The Maverick men will wrap up their season with another neutral site match-up on the island of O'ahu facing Point Loma on Monday at 11:45 a.m. HST (3:45 p.m. Mountain).  The Sea Lions are 5-10 overall and beat Hilo, 5-2 on Saturday.
