In just over a decade of existence, the Colorado Mesa University men's swimming & diving team has put together an impressive history, highlighted by four Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference team titles (2014, 2017, 2019, 2020) and a steadily-improving track record of national meet finishes.
The Mavs, who first sponsored a team in 2009-10 have won three of the last four RMAC crowns, setting a RMAC Championship point scoring record of 1,261 points in 2018-19 before going on to set a program-record 11
th place finish at that year's NCAA Division II National Championships to cap the first decade.
Maverick athletes have also earned a combined 40 First Team CSCAA All-America honors since 2011 and CMU has developed quite a reputation as a national leader, especially in the diving events. That reputation has been solidified in recent years with
Ammar Hassan, who has won all four possible NCAA Division II championships since joining the Maverick program in January, 2018.
Hassan is one of six divers on the 15-member all-decade team, which can be seen below.
Josh Bedford (Breast/IM, 2014-18): The Aurora, Colorado native earned nine CSCAA Honorable Mention All-America honors throughout his career including seven in the relay events. He also earned individual honors in the 100 breast and 200 IM as a senior in 2018 after winning the RMAC title in the 100 breast earlier that season with a school-record time of 54.07 seconds. He also helped the Mavs take the 400 medley relay title in 2017 as CMU won the RMAC team title. He also anchored the Mavs to a school-record time of 6:32.44 in the 800 free relay at that meet.
Bedford also ranks amongst the top four Maverick swimmers of all-time in four different individual events.
Sam Bryant- (Distance Free/IM, 2014-17): Bryant holds the school-record in four individual and five total events and earned nine total all-America certificates in his three seasons as a Maverick after transferring from the University of Hawai'i. A native of Spring, Texas, Bryant earned CSCAA First Team All-America honors in the 1,000 free in both 2016 and 2017 and in the 1,650 free as a senior in 2017. He also picked up six honorable mention accolades.Â
At the conference level, Bryant won nine RMAC crowns throughout his career, including five in 2017 alone. He swept all four of his individual events (500 Free, 1000 Free, 1650 Free, 400 IM) and anchored the Mavs' winning 400 medley relay team as a senior that year, leading CMU to a conference team title. He set four of his five school-records during that impressive meet and still holds the RMAC Championship record of 9:14.17 in the 1,000 free. His altitude-adjusted school records are 4:23.13 (500 Free), 9:02.77 (1,000 Free), 15:16.68 (1,650 Free), 3:47.96 (400 IM) and 6:32.44 (800 Free Relay). Bryant was also named as the RMAC Swimmer of the Year in both 2015-16 and 2016-17.
Sage D'Ambrosia (Diving, 2014-18): D'Ambrosia earned five first team and a maximum eight overall CSCAA All-America honors throughout his diving career. The Loveland, Colorado native was also named as the RMAC Diver of the Year in both 2015-16 and 2017-18 and finished as high as fourth at the national championships.
Mahmoud Elgayar (Breast, 2018-Present)- In his first two years as a Maverick, Elgayar has already earned seven CSCAA All-America honors and five RMAC Championships. The Cairo, Egypt native is also the school-record holder in the 200 breast (1:58.07) and four relay events. As a sophomore in 2019-20, Elgayar was named as the RMAC Swimmer of the Year. As a freshman, he swept the RMAC titles in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. He has already earned nine first team and 11 overall All-RMAC honors and was a CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2019-20.
Ammar Hassan (Diving; 2018-Present): Hassan is unquestionably the most decorated student-athlete in CMU all-sports history as a 4-time national champion. A native of 6
th of October, Egypt, he joined the Maverick program in the spring of 2018 and promptly won both the 1 and 3-meter diving titles at the NCAA Division II National Championships. He then successfully defended both titles in 2019 and was the favorite going into the 2020 championships, which were cancelled mid-meet. Named as the CSCAA National Diver of the Year in both 2018 and 2019, Hassan has competed in two FINA World Championships for Egypt and holds the NCAA Division II Championship in the 3-meter and the RMAC Championship record in the 1-meter.Â
With more of his Maverick career still to come, he is CMU's school-record holder on both boards and has already won five RMAC titles and three RMAC Championship Diver of the Meet honors amongst his long list of accolades.
Justin Hastings (Fly/Back, 2013-16): Hastings enjoyed a stellar career as a swimmer on the Maverick squad, earning five CSCAA Honorable Mention All-America honors in five different events over three different seasons from 2014-16. He also won six RMAC titles in his career, claiming five alone in 2014 as the Mavericks won their first RMAC team title. Additionally, he led off the first Maverick relay to score at nationals in 2016, swimming the backstroke leg on the 200 medley relay squad.
In 2014, he won RMAC titles in the 100 fly, 100 back, 200 back and swam legs on the Mavs' winning 200 and 400 free relay teams. He also won the 100 back in 2016.
Hastings still holds the school record in both the 100 (47.78) and 200-yard (1:46.55) backstrokes and ranks amongst the program's top 10 in seven total individual events.
He is now in his fifth season as an assistant coach for the Mavericks and as the program's recruiting coordinator, has helped bring in the talent in order to sweep the RMAC team titles in 2019 and 2020 with championship-team scoring records.
Sky Hirsch (Sprint Free/Fly, 2014-Present)- A native of Lahaina, Maui, Hawai'i, Hirsch earned five Honorable Mention CSCAA All-America honors in the medley relay events.   As a key member of CMU's RMAC winning team in 2017, Hirsch also ranks third in program history for both the 50 (20.21) and 100 (44.87) free and is sixth in the 100 back at 50.47. He is also a 2017 CSCAA Scholar All-American.
Chandler Livingston (Diving, 2017-Present)- Through three seasons of his Maverick career, the Pueblo, Colorado native has earned three first team and four overall CSCAA All-America honors in diving. He was a first team selection on both the 1 and 3-meter boards in 2020 after finishing eighth on the 1-meter as a sophomore in 2019. He is also a 3-time CSCAA Scholar All-American.
Noah Macomber (Diving, 2016-20): Macomber earned six first team and a maximum eight all-America honors in his impressive Maverick career. He was a 4-time First Team All-American on the 3-meter and won the RMAC titles in that event in both 2017 and 2019. The Zeeland, Michigan native set the RMAC Championship record of 599.90 points in that event in 2019 and finished second behind Hassan at the 2018 NCAA Championships on the 3-meter board.
Brock Martin (Diving; 2010-14): Martin earned six first team and a maximum eight overall all-America honors during his brilliant diving career. He was named as the RMAC Diver of the Year in all four years of his time as a Maverick and was named as the RMAC Championship Diver of the Meet in 2012, 2013 and 2014. The Evanston, Wyoming native also won seven RMAC titles and numerous other awards and helped lead the Mavericks to their first team title as a senior in 2014.
Kent Olson-Stavrakas (Sprint Free/Fly, 2009-14)- A member of the first CMU men's team in 2019-10, Olson-Stavrakas won three events at the 2014 RMAC Championships as a senior helping the Mavs win their first swimming & diving team title in program history. In that year, the Littleton, Colorado product won the 50 free individual title while swimming legs on both the 200 and 400 free relay teams. He also qualified for the national championships that year and still ranks second in program history for both the 50 (20.14) and 100 (44.81) free while sitting eighth in the 100 fly at 49.48.
Ryan Popp (Diving, 2012-16)- Popp was a 4-time CSCAA All-American, including a first team selection in the 1-meter diving event as a senior in 2016, when he finished fifth at the national championships.   A native of Kemmerer, Wyoming was also named as the RMAC Diver of the Year in 2014-15 and capped his career with a CSCAA Scholar All-America selection as a senior.
Chris Radomski (Sprint Free/Fly, 2015-18)- The Texarkana, Texas native earned four CSCAA Honorable Mention All-America honors in relay events during his three seasons as a Maverick after transferring from Drury (Mo.) University. He also swam the butterfly leg on CMU's RMAC winning 400 medley relay team in 2017 and helped lead the Mavs to the RMAC team crown as well. Individually, he ranks amongst CMU's top six in three different events, sitting second in program history for the 100 fly (47.98), which was a former school-record that was broken by fellow all-decade selection
Pedro Terres Illescas.
Torsten Rau (Distance Free/Back, 2017-Present): Through three years of his ongoing Maverick career, Rau has already earned three CSCAA All-America honors and four RMAC titles. In 2020, he won the RMAC titles in the 500, 1000 and 1,650 free as well as in the 800 free relay and was named as the RMAC Championship Swimmer of the Meet. He was also named as a first team all-American in both the 1650 free and 200 back and has earned ten All-RMAC certificates while picking up three CSCAA Scholar All-America awards amongst his many other accolades.
The Sandhausen, Germany native is also the second-ranked Maverick of all time in four events (500 free, 1000 free, 1650 free, 200 back) and has qualified for the national championships as an individual in all three of his years as a Mav.
Pedro Terres Illescas (Butterfly, 2018-20): In two years as a Maverick after transferring from Emmanuel (Ga.) College, Terres Illescas earned seven total CSCAA All-America certificates and eight RMAC titles. In 2019, he finished as the NCAA Division II National Championship runner-up in the 200 fly, the highest ever finish for a Maverick male swimmer at the national championships. The Orihuela, Alicante, Spain product also earned First Team All-America honors in that event in 2020 despite the cancellation of the national meet.
Terres Illescas swept the 100 and 200 fly titles at the RMAC Championships in both years of his Maverick career and set the RMAC Championship record of 1:45.60 in the 200 Fly. He also holds the Maverick records in the 50 (22.42), 100 (47.66) and 200 (1:44.28) fly events and was the butterfly leg swimmer on the Mavs' 200 and 400 medley relay school-record setting teams.Â
He was also a member of four RMAC Championship relay swimming teams and won five RMAC crowns in 2020 after taking three titles in 2019. The Mavericks won the team title in both of those seasons.
