Continuing to look back at the top Colorado Mesa University student-athletes of the last decade, this week we feature the Maverick tennis program and their all-decade teams.
Women's
Â
Sisters had a big impact in the 2010s for the Maverick women, who won two RMAC Regular Season Championships (2014, 2016), two RMAC Tournament titles (2011, 2014) during the decade. They also went to the NCAA Tournament four times in a span of five years from 2010-14 and recorded an impressive 40-12 record in RMAC matches.

Kaitlyn Sera (2008-12)- The Lahaina, Maui, Hawai'i native won nearly 200 (193) matches in her career, a CMU record. She won a school-record 95 singles matches, also a Maverick record, and co-holds the programs' doubles wins record of 97 with her twin-sister Kelleen, who she played throughout her career. Kaitlyn Sera helped the Mavericks to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances (2010-12) and a 2011 RMAC Tournament title.

She earned eight total All-RMAC honors during her career, including five first team selections and was a perfect 25-0 in RMAC singles matches as a Maverick.

Her singles winning percentage of .841 (95-18) is also a school-record. She was also a First Team Academic All-RMAC selection as a senior in 2012.

Kelleen Sera (2018-12)- Nearly as impressive as her twin sister,
Kelleen Sera recorded 69 singles wins, third most in program history, playing mostly in the No. 1 position. She was also an All-RMAC selection in both singles and doubles in each of her four years with the Mavericks and earned four total first team plaudits, including two in singles and two in doubles with her sister.

She was also a First Team Academic All-RMAC selection in both 2011 and 2012 and set the school-record for doubles wins in a season (30) as a junior.

Led by the Seras, the Mavericks registered NCAA Tournament wins, the only ones in program history, in each of her last three seasons and advanced to the Round of 16 in both 2011 and 2012.

Kristen Kirby (2016-20)- Kirby earned First Team All-RMAC honors in all six possible opportunities, doing so in both singles and doubles as a freshman, sophomore and junior (2016-19) before the conference discontinued sponsorship of her COVID-19 pandemic shortened senior season.

Playing in the No. 1 position in both singles and doubles throughout her career, the Thornton, Colorado native recorded 65 singles wins, fourth most in program history, along with 55 doubles triumphs.Â

She also made academic history and became CMU's only 3-time Academic All-American in any sport as a senior in 2020. She was also tabbed as the RMAC Academic Player of the Year in 2019 and was a 2-time RMAC Summit Award Winner (2018, 2019).

Kristyn Wykert (2011-15)- The Laramie, Wyoming native was an impressive combined 27-3 in RMAC matches throughout her career. She claimed 63 doubles wins, seventh most in program history, and was victorious in 60 singles matches, tied for the seventh most in Maverick lore.

She earned First Team All-RMAC honors in doubles three times, playing with Skylar Nelson as a freshman and sophomore before teaming with
Rachel McLaughlin as a senior. She also earned third team honors with
Shannen McNamara as a junior in 2013-14 and earned First Team All-RMAC plaudits in singles as a senior after nabbing second team accolades as a sophomore in 2013. She also earned First Team Academic All-RMAC honors that season after helping the Mavericks reach the NCAA Tournament's Round of 16 for the second straight year as a freshman in 2012.

Katie Kirby (2013-17)- Kirby won 115 combined matches during her 4-year career with the Mavericks. She earned at least one All-RMAC certificate in all four seasons, claiming six overall. She was a first team selection in singles as a junior in 2016 and also teamed with her then freshman sister and fellow all-decade selection Kristen to earn first team honors in doubles in 2017.

Kirby also helped the Mavs win the 2016 RMAC Regular Season title and claimed 60 singles wins and 55 doubles victories in her career.

Victoria Sargent (2007-11) – Sargent, a Greenwood Village, Colorado native and Cherry Creek High School product won 134 total career matches and was a 4-year, 7-time overall All-RMAC selection. Earning three of those honors in the decade, she helped lead the Mavs to a school-record 23 team wins as a senior in the 2010-11 season, a year in which she posted a solid 13-10 No. 2 singles record to earn Third Team All-RMAC accolades while pairing with fellow all-decade team selection Kate Lowder to go 22-12 in doubles while picking up second team all-conference plaudits.

Before the decade turned, she was named as the RMAC Freshman of the Year in 2008 and partnered with Lowder to win the 2009 ITA Fall Regional Championship in doubles as a sophomore.

Sargent's 70 career doubles wins are tied for third most in school history. Her 65 singles wins are tied for fourth most.

She helped the Mavericks to three NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Round of 16 finish as a senior, and was a member of the RMAC Tournament title winning team in 2011 after helping the Mavs win a regular season title in 2009.

Kate Lowder (2007-11)- The Cheyenne, Wyoming, product earned five total All-RMAC certificates, including two as a senior in 2011 when she earned third team honors in singles while playing with the aforementioned Sargent in doubles. She was 21-11 in singles play as a senior as the Mavs won their school-record 23 team matches while advancing to their first NCAA Tournament Round of 16 match.

She was victorious a total of 135 times, picking up 65 singles wins to stand in a fourth place tie in program history. Her 70 doubles wins with Lowder are tied for third most in Maverick lore.

Men's
Â
The Maverick men had a strong decade finishing in the RMAC's top two in seven of the nine possible years that the conference sponsored the sport. Highlighting that success, was a 2017 RMAC Regular Season Co-Championship and a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances (2010, 2014).

Jordan Lyden (2011-15)- Lyden finished his career as the most decorated Maverick in program history. He won a program-record 72 singles matches and posted a .655 (72-38) winning percentage, which is also a Maverick record.   He also claimed 72 doubles wins, third most in program history.

He and Spencer Weinberg were First Team All-RMAC selections in doubles together three times (2013-15) and was a 2-time First Team All-RMAC selection in singles, highlighted by his 2015 RMAC Player of the Year selection. Lyden, who earned a maximum eight total All-RMAC certificates, is also the only Maverick player to have ever won an ITA Regional Championship, doing so as a junior in the fall of 2013.

A product of St. George, Utah, where he won three 3A Utah High School State Championships for Desert Hills High School, Lyden is also the most academically decorated Maverick. He was tabbed as the RMAC Academic Player of the Year as a senior in 2015 and was CMU's Male RMAC Scholar Athlete Award Winner for the 2014-15 academic year. He is also the only 2-time CoSIDA Academic All-District in CMU's men's tennis history and was a 3-time First Team Academic All-RMAC winner.

Spencer Weinberg (2012-16)- Coming into the program a year after Lyden, Spencer Weinberg was just as impressive and made an immediate and long-lasting impact. Selected as the RMAC Freshman of the Year in 2013, Weinberg went on to be named as the RMAC Player of the Year as a senior in 2016 and was a 4-time First Team All-RMAC selection in doubles. Playing with Lyden for his first three years, he teamed with Andres Garcia-Rojas as a senior. Weinberg racked up 70 doubles wins and holds the Maverick record for winning percentage (.673, 70-34) in doubles matches.

The Grand Junction High School product also earned three first team and four total All-RMAC honors in singles. He was victorious in singles 57 times, the sixth most in program history and along with Lyden, helped lead the Mavericks to the 2014 NCAA Division II Tournament.

Andres Garcia-Rojas (2012-16)- The Toronto, Ontario, Canada, native claimed 116 total wins, including 60 in singles and 56 in doubles. Ranked fourth in program history for singles triumphs and eighth for doubles victories, he earned seven total All-RMAC honors in his Maverick career.

He was a first team selection in singles as a freshman in 2013 and capped his career with another first team doubles honor with Weinberg as a senior. He also had a strong singles campaign as a junior in 2014-15 going 21-6, the second best single-season mark in program history.Â

Garcia-Rojas was also a First Team Academic All-RMAC selection as a senior in the spring of 2016.

Andres Hernandez (2009-13)- The Valencia, Venezuela native claimed 58 singles and 56 doubles victories throughout his career to rank fifth and seventh in program history, respectively. He earned five total All-RMAC certificates as a Maverick, highlighted by second team selections in singles as a sophomore in 2011 and with Lyden in doubles as a junior a year later.

Cody Freischlag (2014-17)- A native of Downers Grove, Illinois, Fresichlag picked up eight total All-RMAC certificates throughout his career. He was a 2-time first team pick in singles (2016 & 2017) and teamed with
Nick Farmen for a first team selection in doubles in 2017 as he led the Mavericks to a RMAC Regular Season Co-Championship, the only one in program history.

He claimed 62 wins in doubles, fifth most in program history, and was a victor in singles play 52 different times to rank seventh in program history for singles wins.

Max Lindqvist (2015-19)- A native of the Swedish capital city of Stockholm, Lindqvist earned five All-RMAC certificates in his career. He was a first team selection in singles as both a junior (2017) and senior (2018) and a second team pick in doubles as a senior in 2018 along with partner
Mitchell Steadman.Â

He played in the No. 1 and 2 singles positions for a majority of his career and helped the Mavericks win a share of RMAC Regular Season title as a sophomore in 2017. He tallied 85 total career wins, including 44 in doubles and 41 in singles.

Lucas Martin (2015-19)- Martin also claimed five All-RMAC certificates in his career, which spanned the same time as Lindqvist. Four of those were second team plaudits. He claimed 102 total wins, including 58 in doubles as he teamed with
Alain De La Bastide for second team honors in both 2017 and 2018 after playing with Lindqvist as a freshman. He and De La Bastide also won 16 doubles matches in 2018-19, the first year after the RMAC stopped sponsorship of men's tennis.
